Lt. Erica Ortegas is what Star Trek: The Original Series needed
As a seasoned gamer and Star Trek enthusiast, I’ve traversed countless galaxies, fought alien creatures, and formed alliances with diverse species. Yet, nothing has captivated me more than the vibrant addition of Lt. Erica Ortegas in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. With her wit, charm, and unyielding confidence, she’s a beacon of fresh air on the bridge of the Enterprise.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds delivered an exceptional gem to Star Trek enthusiasts by featuring Melissa Navia as pilot Lt. Erica Ortegas. She’s lively, bold, and has a delightful self-assurance when it comes to piloting a starship, making her a refreshing presence on the Enterprise bridge. Her dynamic with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is so engaging that they appear more like siblings than captain and subordinate. In a way, she’s adding something that Star Trek: The Original Series could have benefited from when it first aired in 1966.
The first pilot of Star Trek: The Original Series included Majel Roddenberry as Number One, but the network wasn’t ready for a female lead, and they didn’t think the audience would be ready for a woman as the second in command. So that part was tossed, and Spock [Leonard Nimoy] become Captain Kirk’s [William Shatner] second in command. And although Nichelle Nichols’ Lt. Uhura was a Starfleet officer on the bridge she never took command of the Enterprise during the run of the series. Being in the sixties, TOS gave all the “heavy lifting” to the men. But what a difference someone like Navia’s Lt. Ortegas would have brought to the helm of the Enterprise.
In essence, Kirk’s crew were task-oriented and obedient to his commands, offering minimal interaction. However, if Kirk had someone like Lt. Ortegas – witty, intelligent, and capable of both challenging and amusing him – the dynamics on the bridge would have been significantly different. While there might have been disagreements, her presence would have brought a welcome dose of humor to the seriousness. In critical situations, it would have been inspiring to witness a woman like her navigating the Enterprise through space anomalies such as wormholes.
Back then, seeing a woman in such a commanding role was as rare as warp drive, given that Star Trek: The Original Series was filmed way back in the sixties. Yet, there’s an exciting possibility of another Captain Kirk gracing our screens, perhaps embodied by Paul Wesley this time around. I sure do hope they let him steer his own course, even if it means deviating from the established narrative a bit. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already shown us that breaking tradition can be rewarding, as they’ve given women prominent roles in a series set before The Original Series. So, who knows what possibilities lie ahead for a new Star Trek show? Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
