Lower Decks' Tawny Newsome wants to get her co-stars involved in the new live-action Trek series

As a seasoned Trekker with memories of warp speeds and Klingon battles etched into my neural pathways, hearing about Tawny Newsome’s desire to collaborate with her Star Trek co-stars once more fills me with an excitement that can only be compared to the anticipation I felt before a boldly going mission.

Lower Decks, the Star Trek animated series, is wrapping up after five seasons in December. However, it’s unclear if the actors who voiced these characters will no longer be associated with the Star Trek universe. But Tawny Newsome, one of the creators of a new live-action comedy within Star Trek, has expressed interest in working with her co-stars again. This is particularly appealing to her since she’s only collaborated with one of them in live-action, which was Jack Quaid. Together, they portrayed their characters in an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In a recent conversation with CBR, Newsome expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with her friends, yet it’s important to note that this upcoming series is not a spin-off from Lower Decks. Instead, it will introduce an entirely fresh set of characters in a completely new show. This means you might encounter Jack Quaid portraying a captain or lieutenant on a ship quite unlike any we’ve seen before.

I mean, I always wanna work with my friends. So yes, without being able to like – there’s not even anything to spoil – I can definitely say that is part of my and Justin’s idea for setting it in the 25th century was so that everybody that we’ve come to love in the franchise, like everyone in the Picard era, all of our friends from Lower Decks, like the possibility is definitely there.

Tawny Newsome

Newsome expresses interest in collaborating with other Star Trek franchise actors, considering the series is set in the 25th century. This could potentially bring back characters like Quark or Worf. Given Quark, played by Armin Shimerman, was known for his humorous antics on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, it would be a missed opportunity not to include him in the show. Similarly, if the series aims for one-liner humor, Worf, portrayed by Michael Dorn, would seamlessly fit the bill.

Newsome’s upcoming series is still awaiting approval, but it seems likely that it will proceed. With Lower Decks concluding, Paramount+ currently features only Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy in its lineup of shows. Therefore, there are vacant slots to be filled, and this potential series might turn out to be an engaging watch.
