If you’re a fan of horror, you really should check out HBO’s Lovecraft Country. It’s a great show, and critics agree – it has an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The past ten years have been fantastic for horror on streaming services like Netflix, HBO, and Amazon Prime Video, with a lot of really good shows being released.
HBO Max has become a go-to source for scary TV shows. Popular series like The Last of Us, True Blood, The Outsider, and the new show It: Welcome to Derry demonstrate how to create compelling, extended horror narratives. Lovecraft Country also deserves to be recognized as a standout example.
Lovecraft Country Is A Horrifying, Entertaining Series
Lovecraft Country is a truly original horror series. Though it features terrifying creatures inspired by H.P. Lovecraft – including shoggoths and Cthulhu – it isn’t based on a specific story by him. Instead, the show adapts Matt Ruff’s 2016 horror novel.
This series takes place in 1950s America, during the time of Jim Crow laws. It follows Tic Freeman and Leti Lewis as they travel through the most intensely racist areas of the country, facing unimaginable terrors along the way. They eventually bring these frightening experiences back with them to Chicago.
Though the show features scary monsters, witches, and ghosts, the real danger comes from the racism these characters experience daily. Lovecraft Country is a visually stunning series that cleverly blends fantastical elements with the harsh realities of segregation and prejudice, creating a show that is both frightening and thought-provoking.
Lovecraft Country Was Canceled After One Season Despite Great Reviews
Despite airing for 10 episodes and having potential for future storylines, HBO canceled Lovecraft Country in July 2021, as reported by Deadline. The network stated they would not be continuing the series with a second season.
The first season of Lovecraft Country was based on a novel, but for season two, showrunner Misha Green and her team had to create a completely new story. HBO allowed them time to develop ideas, but ultimately decided to cancel the show instead.
Though it took a little while to gain momentum, Lovecraft Country ultimately attracted a large audience. The season finale was a big hit, reaching 1.5 million viewers – making it the most-watched debut episode of any original series on HBO Max. Despite the show’s cancellation, the first season of Lovecraft Country is definitely worth checking out.
