Love it or hate it, Disney Star Wars is here for the long haul

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the cosmic trenches of countless galaxies and dimensions, I can say with absolute certainty that Disney’s acquisition of Star Wars has been nothing short of a celestial rollercoaster ride. It’s a universe so vast, it makes the Milky Way look like a playpen for toddlers!

As a die-hard Star Wars enthusiast, I find myself reflecting on the 12-year journey since Disney acquired this iconic franchise. The sheer volume of content produced in these two years of prelude and subsequent ten years is astounding! It’s so expansive that unless you’re dedicated to Star Wars analysis like Star Wars Explained, it’s almost unmanageable to consume everything. This brings me to a suggestion for the future: let’s make it more acceptable to discuss and appreciate only parts of the Star Wars universe that we genuinely enjoy, rather than feeling obligated to consume every single piece of content.

It’s okay not to like everything in Star Wars.

I wrote about this topic last year, but it’s always good to have a refresher course. I would say it’s something that some fans seem to struggle with, but the way social media is nowadays, that’s a grift which you can read more about here in point #3.

In the last 12 years, Disney has given us as followed:

– 5 feature films, with The Mandalorian & Grogu as the upcoming sixth

-14 television series with animation and live action (counting Season 7 of The Clone Wars in this)

-7 micro-series including a short from Studio Ghibli

-1 excellent game show starring Ahmed Best

-7 documentaries including the upcoming John Williams special

-Well over 1,000 books, comics, audio dramas, and short stories

As a dedicated Star Wars fan, I can’t help but be thrilled about the diverse range of games that have graced our screens recently. From epic tales like Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequels, to the excitement of mobile games such as Star Wars Hunters, and most recently, the release of the first open-world game in the franchise, Star Wars Outlaws. It’s a dream come true for any Star Wars enthusiast!

-Don’t forget about Galaxy’s Edge in the Disney Parks

Beyond the numerous non-mainstream LEGO Star Wars series such as The Freemaker Adventures, Rebuild the Galaxy, and seasonal specials, there’s also an extensive library of extended universe content. If you’re a fan of this expanded universe, you’ll be delighted to know that there have been remastered editions released and the current canon frequently references their lore. Moreover, official conventions dedicated to celebrating Star Wars Legends are held regularly, making it an excellent opportunity for newcomers like myself to jump into the extended universe for the first time.

And I know I’m forgetting something somewhere.

It’s perfectly fine if you don’t enjoy all aspects of Star Wars. Many people have their favorite parts and may not be interested in everything. For instance, I know someone who has only watched the series ‘Andor’ because they were intrigued by its quality. They are a die-hard ‘Andor’ fan and aren’t particularly keen on exploring other content. It’s essential to accept and embrace our preferences within this expansive fandom. With Disney offering an abundance of material for celebration, analysis, and personal choice, it’s natural that we find ourselves drawn to specific elements rather than the whole spectrum.

There is something for every fan of Star Wars, whether you’re a pre-schooler watching Young Jedi Adventures or an adult diving into Death Troopers for the first time. Like a great writer once wrote on this site, all of this Disney Star Wars is going to outlive us. So you might as well find what you love and enjoy the ride, ups and downs, and with those you care about.

For things you find unappealing, remember to express your thoughts politely and avoid being disrespectful. After all, it’s just a game, set in an imaginary universe. There’s no need for hostility towards fellow players due to fictional space wizards and laser blasts.

Because Disney Star Wars is not going anywhere anytime soon.
