Love Is Blind UK FINALLY hits Netflix as streaming service releases first four episodes – and viewers are all saying the same thing
As a British television enthusiast who has watched numerous shows spanning over two decades, I must admit that my initial excitement for Love Is Blind UK was dampened by some of the less-than-favorable reviews from critics. However, as someone who appreciates the authenticity and nuances in storytelling that only come with personal experiences, I decided to give it a try.
The long-anticipated U.K. version of “Love Is Blind” officially debuted on Netflix last Wednesday, bringing joy to viewers across the nation as they tuned in.
Despite garnering praise initially, the reality dating show has faced criticism from viewers who find it embarrassing and uncomfortable to watch, often expressing their discomfort by saying they are blushing or cringing.
Following its triumph in America, where six seasons were broadcast, the program is now airing in the United Kingdom, featuring thirty captivating contestants who are eagerly seeking a partner and aiming to tie the knot during the show’s grand wedding episode.
In the same vein, Emma and Matt Willis are stepping into the roles previously held by Nick and Vanessa Lachey as they take on the duty of hosting the entire show.
Just four initial episodes from the new series are currently available, with additional episodes set to premiere on the streaming platform on August 14th, 21st, and 25th.
Many viewers who finished the initial four episodes have expressed their disappointment with the show on platform X, posting criticism such as:
‘Lads it’s bad when I am already cringing at #LoveisBlindUK.’
‘My anxiety and cringe level is through the roof as I begin #LoveIsBlindUK.’
“You seem familiar, like a comforting place” (for “you look like home”)
‘The UK version of #LoveIsBlind is giving me a level of discomfort that’s hard to put into words. In contrast, the US edition doesn’t affect me as much.’
‘This is boring af #LoveIsBlindUK.’
‘The most awkward reveal… #LoveIsBlindUK.’
“I have to admit, I find it hard to connect with Love Is Blind UK. As someone who’s lived through the UK’s high cost of living crisis and seen how many people are struggling financially, it just doesn’t feel authentic to me. It seems like a far cry from the reality I see every day. Maybe it’s because I know that in the UK, love isn’t always blind – it’s often influenced by factors like finances and practicality.”
‘Love is blind uk cast already looking like a disappointment #LoveIsBlindUK.’
‘This Love is Blind UK is f****** horrendous.’
As someone who has watched both American and British versions of “Love is Blind,” I must say that my observation aligns with your statement. The pace of “Love is Blind UK” seems deliberately slow, reminding me of a leisurely afternoon tea in the English countryside. After three episodes, the participants are still hesitant to fully commit to one person, which adds an intriguing layer of suspense that sets it apart from its American counterpart. I’m eager to see how these relationships develop and if the British version will continue to surprise us with unexpected twists and turns just like the original show did.
“Listening to individuals expressing ‘I love you’ to someone they barely know after just five minutes, it seems quite dubious, doesn’t it? #LoveIsBlindUK”
While many people held a different viewpoint, some enthusiasts highly commended the British adaptation of the reality dating show, going so far as to declare it superior to its American counterpart.
Rushing to the programme’s defence, other fans quipped:
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must say that the debut of #LoveIsBlindUK has hit the mark in several aspects. For one, the participants seem to be at an appropriate stage in life for such an experience, which adds depth and authenticity to their interactions. Moreover, the diversity among the contestants is commendable, making for a captivating and inclusive viewing experience.
‘love is blind uk is not disappointing in the slightest !! im loving the drama omg.’
‘Love is blind UK already better than Love is Blind US.’
‘Love is blind UK is so good.’
🎉 Enjoy #LoveIsBlindUK Day! I devoured the first four episodes and:
Following the barrage of harsh criticisms from television reviewers, the public response on social media has shown a clear split.
As a devoted fan, I must express my disappointment after witnessing Emma and Matt Willis’ hosting performance during the Netflix premiere. I felt they seemed to be going through the motions, as if they were clenching their teeth rather than genuinely enjoying the experience. To put it mildly, I found the event quite dreadful.
Elle Hunt from The Guardian expressed her disappointment with the show by awarding it only two stars. She suggested that the idea behind the show seems “untypical” or “not characteristic” of British productions.
As a British observer of reality television, I must say that Emma and Matt Willis seem to be an ideal match for Nick and Vanessa Lachey in terms of star power. However, they may not quite share the same ease with the undertaking as their American counterparts. In my experience, it is not customary for the British to openly discuss feelings, especially on a reality show where constant self-disclosure is required. Nonetheless, I believe that Emma and Matt’s unique perspectives and personalities will make them an interesting addition to the Love Is Blind cast.
According to iNews, they awarded it a four-star rating, but even though they found the initial four episodes addicting, Emily Baker expressed some dissatisfaction with Matt’s hosting abilities.
In her writing, she expressed that there is a significant contrast between their interactions: Emma appears laid-back and conversational with the singles, whereas Matt seems rigid and noticeably uneasy.
‘Not that it really matters – in the four episodes streaming today, the pair only pitch up twice.’
Simultaneously, The Independent’s Ellie Muir delivers a two-star evaluation, stating: “Initially, the news of ex-Busted singer Matt Willis and his spouse Emma taking over hosting responsibilities seemed promising…”
In the first episode, Matt’s hope seems short-lived as he questions with obvious reluctance, “Is love genuinely oblivious to everything?”
I mentioned that the content has been directly lifted from the American version, with the exception of accents. Essentially, it’s a case of replicating the same approach.
The Willises and Lacheys seem to be following the same script, repeating monotonous lines in a similar rhythm. At one point, Emma playfully taps Matt awkwardly on camera; it appears that Matt would prefer to be elsewhere.
The first four episodes of Love Is Blind UK are streaming on Netflix now
