‘Love is Blind’ Season 9 finale ends with a dramatic first. Here’s what happened

This article contains spoilers for the Season 9 finale of “Love Is Blind.”

According to its creator, Chris Coelen, the popular Netflix dating show “Love is Blind” is designed as an experiment. It explores whether couples can form a strong, lasting connection based on emotional intimacy, rather than physical attraction or how they look.

For the first time ever, Season 9 of the show didn’t result in any couples getting married. None of the couples said “I do” at the final commitment ceremony, which became available to stream on Wednesday.

Though six couples initially left the pods engaged, things quickly fell apart. Kacie McIntosh ended her engagement with Patrick Suzuki, followed by Annie Lancaster and Nick Amato, and then Madison Maidenberg and Joe Ferrucci—all documented in the tenth and eleventh episodes. Heading into the final wedding episode, only three couples remained: Ali Lima and Anton Yarosh, Kalybriah Haskin and Edmond Harvey, and Megan Walerius and Jordan Keltner.

Megan and Jordan called off their wedding shortly before it was supposed to happen. Megan realized they had very different lifestyles that wouldn’t be compatible in the future, largely due to their careers. Jordan works demanding hours in the transportation and logistics industry, while Megan is a successful entrepreneur with a lot of flexibility. Adding to the challenges, Jordan is a single dad raising a young son who has Type 1 diabetes, and they frequently talked about the difficulties of parenthood throughout their time together.

At their wedding, Anton said he would marry Ali, but she refused, telling him she couldn’t go through with it. She explained that the man she connected with during their time in the pods felt different from the person she was getting to know in person, and she ran away crying. Later, Anton shared in an interview that he had only shown her kindness and was deeply hurt by her decision, calling it “really awful.”

Kalybriah shocked everyone at her wedding by rejecting Edmond’s proposal, even after he said yes. She explained that he deserved someone fully committed, and she didn’t feel she could be that person. Edmond handled the rejection with surprising grace, and Kalybriah thanked him before they left together, holding hands. She hinted that they might get back together sometime in the future.

Patrick Suzuki, who appeared on the Netflix reality show about dating, discussed his relationships with both Anna Yuan and Kacie McIntosh, including why he and Kacie ended things.

Season 9 of the show featured a lot of drama, including difficult breakups and some participants saying things that caused controversy. Patrick struggled with questions about his identity as an Asian American, and his engagement ended almost immediately after he met his fiancée, Kacie. Annie and Nick called off their wedding plans and later apologized for comments they made about raising LGBTQ+ children. Plus, a disagreement between Kalybriah and Edmond regarding waiting until marriage for intimacy became a major topic of discussion online.

For the first eight seasons of the show, every season concluded with at least one wedding. Though not all of those couples stayed together, many are still married and have even started families. Just before the Season 9 finale aired, Cameron Hamilton and Lauren Speed-Hamilton—a couple from Season 1—shared the exciting news that they had welcomed their first child.

The reunion for Season 9, where they’ll finally discuss all the recent breakups, will be streaming on Netflix starting October 29th at 6 PM Pacific Time / 9 PM Eastern Time.
