‘Love & Hip Hop’ alumna Masika Kalysha’s estranged husband dies in wrong-way crash

Masika Kalysha, a reality TV star from VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood,” is grieving the loss of her soon-to-be ex-husband, Jamar Champ. He tragically died in a car accident in Houston early Tuesday morning after a collision with another vehicle.

She posted a video on Instagram Tuesday morning, writing, “I’m falling apart.” She also asked for privacy for her family and children during this difficult time.

The actor and singer asked blogs not to report on Champ’s death until she was ready. She explained that it was important she be the one to tell her children about their father’s accident, saying she didn’t want them to hear the news from someone else, like at school.

Music

Despite the drama and relationship conflicts, VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop” is still a hugely popular reality TV series. It’s evolved from simple entertainment into a major part of pop culture, and it even launched the career of Cardi B.

Houston police are investigating a crash that happened around 12:05 a.m. on the West Interstate Highway. According to a police statement, a silver BMW was driving the wrong way – in the eastbound lanes – when it collided head-on with a silver Tesla Cybertruck. The impact caused the BMW to catch fire, and the Cybertruck then hit an 18-wheeler.

Police stated that both drivers – the one in the BMW and the one in the Cybertruck – died in the crash. The BMW driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Cybertruck driver died later at a hospital. The truck driver was unharmed.

Police haven’t officially released the names of the drivers involved, but Champ’s family told KHOU 11 that he was driving the Tesla and sadly died from his injuries. He was 38 years old.

Kalysha appeared to announce the passing of her husband on X (formerly Twitter), posting a message about being woken up at 2:00am and unable to go back to sleep.

Halle Bailey and her former boyfriend, rapper DDG, have agreed to pause their disagreements in their ongoing dispute over their son, Halo.

She was completely shocked and heartbroken. “I just received the worst news of my life,” she said, and asked for prayers for herself and her children.

She later told The Shade Room that Champ had passed away. In a statement, she asked for privacy and understanding for her family as they grieve and remember him.

“Your thoughts, prayers, and love mean the world to us as we navigate this devastating loss.”

Kalysha married Champ, a former college football player, in 2021, and they have a 3-year-old daughter named Amari, as reported by People magazine. Kalysha also has a daughter, Khari, with rapper Fetty Wap. In December 2023, she announced that she and Champ had separated. A year later, she stated they were in the process of mediation as they moved towards divorce.
