Masika Kalysha, known from Love & Hip Hop, strongly responded to criticism she received after sharing photos from the funeral of her separated husband, Jamar Champs.
Last month in Houston, 38-year-old Champs died in a car accident. A BMW driving the wrong way collided with his Tesla Cybertruck, causing it to crash into a semi-truck.
Okay, so I was scrolling through Instagram last night and saw Kalysha – my absolute favorite – at the funeral. Honestly, my heart broke for her. She was just completely devastated, totally sobbing. There were pictures of her just…falling apart, and her dad had to literally hold her up. It was so raw and heartbreaking to see, but it just made me love her even more, if that’s possible. I feel so connected to her, even through something this awful.
Many of the photos showed her daughters, nine-year-old Khari, who she shares with Fetty Wap, and three-year-old Amari, who she shares with Champs, and they were often crying.
Oh my god, you guys, I was obsessed with their love story! Kalysha, she actually said those vows – ‘Till death do us part!’ – when she married Champs back in 2021. It was so beautiful! Then, sadly, they split in 2023, and last year she even tried to undo the marriage with an annulment. But she still said she’d carry on his legacy, can you believe it? It just breaks my heart, honestly. She’s such a devoted fan, I mean, wife… it’s just so tragic!
I was shocked to see the backlash Kalysha received online over some recent photos. Honestly, it was awful to watch people criticize her personal life like that. She responded last night on her Instagram stories, and she was furious. She basically said if anyone has a problem with anything she shares about her husband, kids, or her life in general, they should just unfollow her – and she didn’t sugarcoat it! As a supporter, I completely understand her defending her boundaries and protecting her family.

She angrily told her over 850,000 followers that she wouldn’t bother explaining her actions to anyone.
I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported my children and me. Your help has meant the world, and I truly couldn’t have gotten through this without you. Please continue to think of us and check in – simply being there makes all the difference.
I was really struck by the photos she shared. They showed her completely heartbroken, comforting her daughters while she herself was crying, absolutely sobbing, and leaning on her dad for strength. It was a raw and incredibly moving display of emotion.
She described grief as a haunting silence, an ache that stays with you even though you can’t quite grasp it. It feels intensely painful, like you’re struggling to breathe. She shared that she wouldn’t have coped without the support she received.
“I made my promises,” Kalysha shared, referencing her late partner, Champs. “Until death separates us… I’ll continue to honor your memory. You’ll always be in my heart, and I think about you every single day.”
Despite her strong response to criticism on Monday night, she continued to receive online harassment on Tuesday. For example, one user on X (formerly Twitter) mocked her with a message saying she was acting erratically and had gotten a young child involved in drama.
Someone else commented that Masika seemed to be putting on a show of grief, finding it very odd that photos of her crying at the funeral were being posted online.
Honestly, I was shocked when I saw this post. Someone shared that Masika actually asked someone to photograph her and her kids crying – and then post it! I just don’t understand the thought process behind publicly sharing something so vulnerable and, frankly, a little heartbreaking. It really makes you question what’s going on when someone actively requests photos of themselves and their children in that state to be shared with the world.

Champs’ family announced his death on October 28th, following a crash. The Houston Police Department had previously released information about the incident without identifying him.
A driver in a Tesla Cybertruck was hit head-on by a silver BMW traveling the wrong way on the Katy Freeway.
A BMW caught fire, and the driver died at the scene. Shortly after, a Cybertruck driven by Champs hit a blue Freightliner semi-truck.
Champs suffered fatal injuries and died at the hospital. The 66-year-old truck driver was not injured.
When Kalysha shared the news of his passing, she explained that he always acted like a father to Khari, her daughter with Fetty Wap, even though they weren’t together anymore.
She said it will likely take time to fully come to terms with everything, adding that grieving is a process, not an event, in an interview with KHOU-11 in Houston.
When talking about her daughter with Champs, she shared a touching conversation. She asked her three-year-old if she understood what was happening, and the little girl replied, ‘Yes.’ When asked what she understood, she said, ‘I want to go with Daddy and God in heaven and get the candy.’
