I was really excited to hear that LOV. Foundation and XTANT are teaming up! They’re starting this awesome long-term project all about traditional crafts – things like weaving and other textile work. It’s cool because they want to make sure these skills aren’t lost, and pass them down from older generations to us younger ones. Basically, it’s about keeping creative traditions alive, which I think is super important.
This summer in Mallorca, lov.YATRA launched a unique program that brought together artists, cultural leaders, and innovators to explore the island’s vibrant arts scene. Inspired by the Sanskrit word ‘yatra,’ which means a meaningful journey, the project focused on how Mallorca’s history, traditions, shared experiences, and continuous creativity have shaped it into what it is today.
The program revolved around the launch of XTANT Nomad, bringing together artists, craftspeople, collectors, academics, and cultural experts from around the world who work with contemporary crafts. The event showcased textiles not just as an art form, but also as a way to share stories, traditions, and cultural heritage through exhibits, discussions, and workshops.
The trip took participants across Mallorca, offering exclusive access to artists’ studios, galleries, and important cultural landmarks. Highlights included a visit to Joan Miró’s studio and archives at the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, a behind-the-scenes look at the La Seu cathedral, and a tour of Can Vivot, a 14th-century palace that has been lovingly maintained by the same family for over 20 generations.
I had the amazing opportunity to attend an event at Son Moragues, nestled right in the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana mountains – a UNESCO World Heritage site! It was incredible to see how art and taking care of the land went hand-in-hand. And the food! We got to experience some fantastic meals at Brut Restaurant and Bar LaSang, which really showed how local ingredients, traditional fermentation, and small-scale producers all contribute to the unique creative vibe of the island. It was a real taste of Mallorca’s soul.
Instead of viewing heritage as fixed and unchanging, lov.YATRA explored how traditional skills and knowledge are evolving as they’re used by today’s artists and craftspeople.
