Louis Theroux shared good news about his hair loss condition, alopecia, on Instagram Thursday. He said he’s recovering well and starting to see hair regrowth, about a year after experiencing its worst effects.
The documentary creator, 55, first started to battle the autoimmune disease as early as 2021.
After acknowledging his hair looked its worst in 2025, he’s happy to report it’s now growing back.
Louis recently addressed fan questions about his hair after viewers of his new documentary on Netflix pointed out some changes.
He mentioned his hair is a bit strange, particularly in the back. He’s noticed it’s become patchy, especially when he goes in and out of buildings.
I made that documentary last year, and I believe my hair was at its shortest point during filming.
I’m so relieved to say my hair is finally starting to grow back! It’s not a complete recovery yet, but it’s definitely much better than it was before, and I’m really seeing a difference. It’s a huge weight off my shoulders.
It’s been over a year since I last talked about my alopecia. As you know, it’s an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss in patches – we call those patches lesions. And surprisingly, it seems to be improving.
I haven’t done anything to change things. I haven’t tried any treatments, taken any medication, or altered my eating habits. And honestly, I don’t feel any different – my stress levels are exactly the same.
‘I am just going to put it down to the vague mysteries of life and the human condition.
I’m just happy things are improving. I don’t take anything for granted anymore, and I’m really glad I still have my hair – I can even see it from the sides and a little bit in the back, which is a bit amusing.
I understand there are more important things happening in the world, but losing my hair has been stressful, and I know some of you might be wondering about it. I hope I’ve been able to address some of your questions.
He shared a post explaining that a year ago, he’d spoken about his alopecia. It began in 2021 with hair loss in his beard and eyebrows, and eventually led to patches of hair falling out on his head.
It’s been five years since things were at their worst in 2025, and thankfully, my scalp and I are doing much better now!
I’m really happy to see hair growing back in a few spots! I’m not sure why – I don’t take any medicine and I don’t really watch what I eat. But I’m very thankful, and I enjoy having hair.
I’ve been following Manosphere’s work with Louisexplore, and it’s really concerning. They’re exposing how some online personalities are influencing young boys with harmful and narrow views of what it means to be a man. It’s a deep dive into how these influencers are shaping their thinking, and it’s honestly pretty frightening to see.
He interviewed popular online personalities like Harrison Sullivan, known as HSTikkyTokky, Myron Gaines, and Nicolas Kenn De Balinthazy, who goes by Sneako.
Louis Theroux’s new documentary, Inside The Manosphere, offers an unflinching look at a rising online world centered around extreme masculinity and the people who promote its often-debated ideas. Theroux was given unique access to explore this network and its key figures.
The Manosphere is a network of online spaces – like forums, websites, and blogs – where people discuss and share ideas that often oppose feminism, focus on traditional ideas of masculinity, and sometimes express dislike or contempt for women.
Louis personally alerted parents after some boys experienced harmful encounters during the documentary’s production.
At 55, they immersed themselves in a community and discovered how people there expressed their opinions on traditional ideas about gender and values.
At the start of the documentary, Louis explains he’d observed a growing trend online: male influencers were essentially dominating sections of the internet by offering young men quick fixes and advice on how to succeed in life.
Louis explained to The Mirror that these trends aren’t minor – anyone with children, particularly boys, will recognize they’re becoming increasingly common. Their impact is noticeable in schools, at work, and all over the internet.
This isn’t a small trend; it’s clearly impacting our culture, especially for families with sons. You can see this influence everywhere – in schools, at work, and all over the internet.
Louis last talked about his alopecia in July 2025, mentioning it had ‘slightly improved’ and sharing a photo of one of the affected areas on his scalp.
He shared on Instagram that his hair was starting to grow back on his head after he shaved off his eyebrows in March 2024.
Louis jokingly claimed he’d discovered a way to get rid of neck wrinkles, and shared a photo of himself using a clothespin to pull his skin taut.
After initially declining to show pictures of the spots on his head, the broadcaster briefly revealed one of them, located at his hairline.
Okay, you guys, you are NOT going to believe this! Louis just posted, and he’s showing off his hair – it actually looks fuller! He says his alopecia might be improving! Can you even?! But that’s not all! He’s also figured out how to get rid of neck wrinkles! He’s teasing us with a ‘guess what it is!’ and I’m literally losing it trying to figure out his secret. I need to know! It’s a miracle, honestly, a total miracle!
In the fourth photo, I’ve shown a close-up of one of the bald spots caused by my Alopecia – it’s on my forehead. Doctors call these spots lesions.
I’m not going to pretend I’m not a little thrilled to see streaks of grey and white appearing in my hair. If you’re curious about the history of this phenomenon, look up “Marie Antoinette Syndrome.”
Louis had previously shared that he got his eyebrows permanently tattooed after he shaved them off while dealing with a health issue.
Louis explained his decision to get treatment in a recent post, saying he knows there are more serious issues happening, but he’d previously mentioned losing his eyebrows to alopecia…
I got many kind messages, and a few people recommended I try “microblading,” which is like a temporary tattoo. I decided to give it a shot! It involved two appointments, each lasting a few hours.
It’s great to have my natural appearance restored. My new eyebrows are better defined and shaped than my original ones. Plus, a few strands of my own hair were blended in, which makes them look really realistic.
He explained that his scalp is changing, and admitted he’s hesitant to share pictures because dealing with hair loss is emotionally difficult and sometimes strange.
Louis went on to say that he’s developed more bald spots on his head – technically called lesions. He has pictures of them, but isn’t sure if he’ll share them because they’re a little strange and upsetting to see.
‘Life goes on. I am happy and healthy in every other way and I feel very grateful.’
He shaved off his eyebrows and immediately shared the results on Instagram with a series of selfies and a video of the process. He had previously spoken openly about his struggles with the condition that led to this decision.
He’d mentioned to fans that he was thinking about getting a permanent eyebrow tattoo to help his career, and had also looked into microblading, a less permanent tattoo option.
The well-known journalist began a dramatic makeover by shaving off his eyebrows. He then shared three selfies showcasing the new look from various angles.
He shared a photo with the caption: ‘Spot the difference! I shaved my eyebrows off! I’m considering microblading, but until then, I think having no eyebrows looks better than uneven ones. What do you think?’
