Louis Theroux defends Manosphere documentary against one key criticism

Louis Theroux’s new Netflix documentary, Inside The Mansophere, has received mostly positive reviews. However, before its release, Theroux addressed a common concern: some critics wondered if the show should be giving a platform to the controversial influencers and their views on gender roles by featuring them and their ideas.

This 90-minute documentary explores how influential figures – including Harrison Sullivan, Myron Gaines, Nicolas Kenn De Balinthazy, Justin Waller, and Ed Matthews – are changing the way young men think about what it means to be masculine.

According to The Independent, covering these individuals inadvertently gives them the attention they desire and amplifies their reach, as any publicity is seen as a positive outcome for them.

Before the documentary was released, Louis Theroux explained he didn’t like calling it a “platform” for people’s stories. He felt it was an awkward way to describe how a program can present someone’s experiences (according to Radio Times).

You could simply have someone as a guest on a podcast and let them speak freely for an hour. Alternatively, you could create a documentary, which requires more effort to provide background information, maintain perspective, and ask thoughtful, challenging questions – and that’s the approach we prefer.

The presenter explained that it’s fitting for the film to include carefully chosen moments where the people interviewed share what they genuinely think.

Mashable appeared to support Theroux’s methods, noting that while his documentary might inadvertently give these individuals more publicity, it effectively reveals their true motivation: making money off of their followers.

The book has received widespread praise, including a five-star review from the Telegraph. They wrote, “Those already familiar with the ‘manosphere’ might not be surprised, but I was shocked and disturbed by how extensively these backward ideas have been promoted online by tech companies who should have known better.”
