Louis Litt’s Hilarious Comeback Highlights Why Suits LA Flopped
Heed this notice: Spoilers for Suits LA Episode 12
The twelfth episode of Suits LA brought some of the spin-off’s most memorable moments, but the reappearance of the beloved character Louis Litt serves to highlight the series’ unrealized dramatic possibilities. Rick Hoffman’s portrayal of the lawyer was a standout in the original Suits, and his guest appearance in the West Coast adaptation offered a welcome respite amidst the dense storylines and emotional betrayals. Stephen Amell stars as Ted Black, a former business partner and close friend of Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt) in the Suits LA ensemble. Together with Erica Rollins (Lex Scott Davis) and Rick Dodsen (Bryan Greenberg), the main quartet represents two competing law firms.
Regrettably, the questionable foundation of the show “Suits LA” set it off on an uneven path from its premiere in February, and it’s been struggling to find its footing ever since. The heavily edited flashback sequences, forced interactions between underdeveloped characters, and overly somber undertones have left “Suits LA” with a puzzling image that contradicts the broader identity of the franchise. Moreover, “Suits LA” has contributed to explaining its poor ratings by adopting a tone that invites former cast members such as Louis Litt, portrayed by Hoffman, to outshine the newcomers.
Louis Litt’s Return In Suits LA Episode 12 Is Mostly Comedic
Rick Hoffman Plays Off Josh McDermitt Well
The role of Louis Litt in episode 12 of Suits LA was understated, yet he proved to be the most captivating character undeniably. In an unusual turn of events, Louis and Stuart find themselves at an anger management retreat. Their shared history of workplace animosities, with Harvey Spencer and Ted Black reprising their roles as antagonists, serve as a common ground for them. From their initial encounter, marked by a heated argument over a bell cart, Louis exhibits a raw, almost wild intensity that refreshingly contrasts Suits LA’s otherwise subdued atmosphere.
Despite maintaining a straight face, Louis consistently infuses humor into his lines, from poking fun at the other anger-management participants to frequently referring to his fist as “Little Louis.” In episode 12 of Suits LA, the show masterfully combines comedy with somber moments, such as Stuart revealing his concerns for his family’s safety. However, these serious scenes carry maximum impact due to the comedic approach Suits LA took to convey a heartfelt message. The lighthearted atmosphere created by Louis helped set the stage for Stuart’s emotional revelation in episode 12.
Suits LA Lacks The Humor & Wit That Made The Original So Enjoyable To Watch
Leaning Intro Drama Was The Spinoff’s First Misstep
The performance of Louis Litt sadly underscores how distinct Suits LA seems compared to the original series. Although Suits is revered as a sexy, witty, and outstanding example of legal dramas, the West Coast spinoff deviated from its formula by focusing more on plot twists rather than building a solid foundation. While Suits charmed viewers immediately, the pilot of Suits LA centered around betrayal – an engaging topic, but one that needs audience familiarity with the characters to be fully impactful.
In contrast to the original series Suits, which employed a gradual build-up of tension, Suits LA appeared to favor quick and more dynamic scenes. Instead of introducing the world of entertainment law in California as Suits did, Suits LA plunged straight into stories involving mob bosses and haunting pasts. The sudden twists in the first episode of Suits LA felt unnecessary and insignificant, but they played a crucial role in shaping the rest of the season. The spinoff tried to inject humor occasionally, but the persistent themes of Ted’s deceased brother and Stuart’s dangerous clients created an oppressively heavy atmosphere that overshadowed any remaining comedic moments in Suits LA.
Sadly, Suits LA No Longer Has Time Left To Fix Its Mistakes
NBC Won’t Be Renewing The Spinoff For A Second Season
In contrast to the rocky start of episode 12 in “Suits LA,” it significantly improved from its disastrous debut. Regrettably, the spinoff won’t have a chance to correct its errors as NBC has officially axed “Suits LA.” This means that episode 13 will serve as both the season finale and the final episode of the series. With another season, the West Coast version could have found its footing, learning from its strongest episodes. However, the intriguing drama surrounding Ted Black’s hidden past initially deterred many viewers, and despite attempts to win back lost audience, “Suits LA” failed to recover those viewers.
It was only a matter of time before Suits LA got cancelled, given that it had some significant hurdles to overcome due to the immense popularity and unique charm of the original Suits. In an attempt to stand out, the spinoff sometimes felt too disconnected from its predecessor, while trying to replicate its distinctive atmosphere, it came across as a poor imitation. Suits LA struggled to find its own identity without the support of original cast members, making it challenging for the spinoff to find its footing and thrive.
