Los Angeles hardcore band Zulu parts with singer after abuse allegations

The well-known Los Angeles hardcore punk group, Zulu, has ended its association with lead vocalist and original member Anaiah Muhammad following an accusation of abuse made by another artist.

This week, Simpson, the musician, shared on Instagram that last April, we had an interaction that was consensual at first but ended up traumatizing me. Later, I was manipulated into believing I was menstruating by him until I sought medical attention following a subsequent encounter where he strangled me so severely it left a large bruise around my neck to part of my collarbone. It wasn’t until I showed the injury to someone that I realized I needed help.

Recognizing that something was extremely unfair,” Simpson went on, “I started discussing my situation and emotions with individuals who might be aware of others hurt by Anaiah. This led me to discover a widespread, shocking cycle of mistreatment, making me realize I was just another victim in this pattern.

Muhammad clearly expressed in his statement that he has never resorted to any kind of physical violence, a behavior which fundamentally contradicts his core values. He firmly asserts that he has no history of hurting or causing harm to anyone, especially partners.

Speaking directly, let me clarify matters: The allegations hurled against me are not just false but also detrimental – for me, my family, my band, and those who’ve stood by me over the years. To set the record straight, I have never resorted to coercion, manipulation, or isolation in my interactions with this person. There has been no attempt on my part to control her surroundings, intrude upon her personal life, or limit her freedom in any manner.

The surviving members of Zulu declared that the group would be taking a break, and they provided an extensive explanation regarding the accusations.

We acknowledge the accusations made against Anaiah. We support everyone who has suffered abuse, and we strongly denounce any form of mistreatment towards vulnerable individuals in our communities. Our sympathies are with anyone who has endured physical or emotional harm, assault, or any action that violated their autonomy.

We, members of Zulu, have chosen to distance ourselves from Anaiah and will no longer collaborate or perform with him in any manner. We were unaware of the allegations against him before they surfaced, which we found troubling upon reading the thorough report. We realize that this news may have been distressing and disheartening for anyone who admired our band, its ethos, and its representation. Upon returning home, we canceled our upcoming performances and have decided to temporarily halt this project.

Due to unspecified reasons, the band has annulled all their forthcoming concert appearances, which encompasses their scheduled performances as the opening act for Refused during their last tour across North America in 2022.
