Los Ángeles Azules to be honored with Hispanic Heritage Award

As a connoisseur of music who has traversed the globe to immerse myself in diverse sounds and rhythms, I must say that my heart swells with joy upon hearing the news of Los Ángeles Azules receiving the 2024 Hispanic Heritage Award. Having witnessed their mesmerizing performances and felt the pulsating beat of their music resonate within me, I can attest to their power to move audiences across generations and borders.

Over several generations, Los Ángeles Azules have carved out their unique cumbia sound, echoing from Iztapalapa all the way to global audiences. In September 2024, they will grace the stage at the 37th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards in Washington, where they are slated to receive the prestigious award.

“Elías Mejía, one of the founders, expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the Hispanic Heritage Awards, acknowledging the significant honor bestowed upon their extended artistic journey. He also took a moment to thank all our fans and supporters who have been with us every step of the way throughout this time.”

As a passionate supporter, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be looking forward to America’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on September 27, which is proudly brought to us by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. This special event will air on PBS. Alongside me, esteemed figures like fashion designer Carolina Herrera, Beautyblender creator Rea Ann Silva, and NBA star Carmelo Anthony will also be honored. Can’t wait!

“For decades, Los Ángeles Azules have stirred emotions globally with their music and messages, as stated by Jose Antonio Tijerino, the foundation’s president and CEO. We are ecstatic to bestow our arts award upon this exceptional musical powerhouse, and we eagerly anticipate celebrating our shared cultural pride, accomplishments, and vision, together with the other honorees.”

The Mejía Avante band, founded by siblings in the late ’70s, has been entertaining audiences for close to fifty years now. In 1997, they made their mark on the Latin music scene with their heartfelt ballad “Cómo Te Voy a Olvidar,” reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.

Boasting over 19 million monthly listeners on Spotify, this musical group is celebrated for their inventive blends of cumbias sonideras – a genre characterized by heavy use of synthesizers – and they’ve even crafted symphonic cumbias that seamlessly combine classical orchestra instrumentation.

For the past ten years, “Entrega De Amor” artists have remade several of their top tunes alongside modern vocalists like Natalia Lafourcade, HaAsh, Pepe Aguilar and others. In 2019, they achieved their first No. 1 in 19 years on the Regional Mexican chart with “Nunca Es Suficiente,” a collaboration with Lafourcade.

The band Los Ángeles Azules is also the first Mexican group to be part of YouTube’s “Billion Views Club,” as two of their videos have surpassed 1 billion views each: “Mis Sentimientos” featuring Ximena Sariñana (with approximately 1.2 billion views), and “Nunca Es Suficiente,” which features Lafourcade (with 2 billion views).

As a passionate moviegoer penning my thoughts, let me share that this musical ensemble has garnered numerous Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, notably for their album “Cumbia del Corazón” in the best cumbia/vallenato category. This masterpiece boasts collaborations with illustrious artists such as Nicki Nicole, Carlos Vives, Juanes, among others. Additionally, they were honored with a prestigious Billboard lifetime achievement award.

After receiving recognition from the foundation during Hispanic Heritage Month, the band is set to receive additional honors later this year, specifically at the 2024 Latin Grammy Awards, in recognition of their lifelong accomplishments.
