Yet, there was a time when I was told my strong Scottish accent would hinder me from making it big in the industry. Acclaimed TV host, news reporter, and writer, aged 64, is set to commemorate her remarkable 40-year career with a documentary called “Lorraine Kelly: Four Decades of Unforgettable Moments.” This special will be broadcast on October 2 at 9pm.

Yet, it’s likely that she is most renowned for hosting her own daily talk show, Lorraine, on ITV, a position she’s held for over a decade and a half.
However, her path to success wasn’t simple or smooth, encountering numerous challenges on her climb to the peak.
When discussing her challenges at the start of her career, Lorraine expressed that she received chances which are now scarce. She went directly from school to her local newspaper and later to the BBC, after amassing numerous letters of rejection in a drawer.
It was mentioned to me by the head of BBC Scotland that my television career might not succeed due to my distinct working-class Glasgow accent.
‘That comment turned out to be the most fortunate event: it prompted me to contact the head of the recently established TV station, TV-am. They then invited me for an interview and subsequently hired me as their Scottish correspondent. Fortunately, Bruce Gyngell being Australian meant he didn’t harbor the same class biases that some reporters might have had.’
She stated, “The expensive lifestyle and work environment in London currently make it difficult for working-class children from other parts of the country to take up jobs there. This situation needs improvement, and there should also be increased job opportunities available outside of London.
In recent times, we’ve emphasized the significance of diversity, which is indeed correct. Yet, it’s crucial that this diversity encompasses young individuals from working-class backgrounds who resonate with and can connect to the majority of our audience. It benefits us all if we provide them a platform to express their views.
Even with her extensive professional background, Lorraine’s most impressive year yet seems to be 2024, as she received a notable award at the 2024 BAFTA TV Awards just a few months ago.
The mum-of-one received a standing ovation when she took to the stage to accept the award which was given to her by actor Brian Cox.
After getting the award, Lorraine expressed: “This prize feels exceptionally significant since it’s given by BAFTA, and I’m truly humbled. The upcoming event promises to be extraordinary, and I can hardly wait for it.
This year, the TV personality was blessed with her first grandchild as well. Her daughter, Rosie Kelly Smith, and her partner, Steve White, brought their newborn, Baby Billie, into the world in August.
