Loro Piana Delves into the Excellence of Its Craft

Established back in 1924, the luxury brand Loro Piana has consistently delivered exceptional craftsmanship for a full century. For the very first time, this esteemed label is presenting an exhibition at the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) in Shanghai, entitled “If You Understand, You Understand: The Pursuit of Excellence by Loro Piana.

Guided by Judith Clark, this captivating event delves into Loro Piana’s enduring status as a high-end brand, tracing its connections with China’s cashmere goat breeders who have been supplying the company since the 1960s. Given this background, it’s fitting that the exhibition is strategically placed in a location that harmoniously reflects these relationships.

The MAP’s cutting-edge galleries house a wide exhibition across fifteen rooms (approximately 1,000 square meters) brimming with historical textiles, vintage records, thirty-three specially crafted designs, and numerous artworks, some of which originate from the Sergio and Luisa Loro Piana Collection.

Visitors can catch a peek at the authentic thistle machine, brought over especially from Vallero. This vintage piece of machinery, symbolic of the brand since the mid-20th century, is placed near an impeccably replicated quality control lab.

The project aims to offer a multi-sensory exploration, inviting participants to engage tactilely, olfactorily, and visually. A hallway will be cushioned and covered with the distinctive “cashfur” material for guests to feel, while the last room will be characterized by its unique mountainous scent, reflecting the environments where cashmere goats are raised.

The exhibition titled “If You Know, You Know: Loro Piana’s Quest for Excellence” is currently being showcased at the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai, and it will run until May 5th. To secure your spot, you can buy tickets ahead of time on the museum’s website or through WeChat.
