87-year-old actress Loretta Swit, who is famously recognized for her role as Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan on the TV adaptation of “M*A*S*H,” passed away in her New York City apartment on Friday. Her representative confirmed this news to The Times.

At approximately 10 a.m., Swit was discovered by her housekeeper, as confirmed by publicist Harlan Boll. He stated that he had spoken with her at 11 p.m. on Thursday night, which corresponds to 2 a.m. on Friday in New York. The doorman observed her placing something in the mailbox at 4 a.m. on Friday, according to Boll, and six hours after this incident, she was reported missing.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but reminisce about my unforgettable journey playing the iconic character Hot Lips on M*A*S*H. Born as Loretta Jane Szwed in Passaic, N.J., on November 4, 1937, this role became more than just a part for me – it was an integral part of my life from its pilot episode in 1972 to the series’ poignant finale in 1983. To me, M*A*S*H wasn’t just a sitcom; it represented so much more as we delved into the complexities of the Korean War.

In 1977, she expressed her belief that there’s a form of intelligence guiding the humor. She also stated that since the audience is vast, they should be given the best entertainment possible, which we aim to deliver at the highest level.

Even though Swit’s iconic role as the libidinous blonde in uniform propelled her into widespread recognition, she had already been acting since before her 8th birthday, gracing stages and musicals in New York City. At 17, she decided to leave home and pursue a career in theater, balancing secretarial work with studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Swit, known for her dedication to work, seamlessly transitioned between comedic and dramatic roles. She graced the stage in productions like “Same Time, Next Year,” “Mame,” and “The Odd Couple,” before making the move to Los Angeles to star in “M*A*S*H.” Her legendary appearances can be found in shows such as “Hawaii Five-O,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Mannix,” maintaining a successful TV career until quite recently.

Back in 2008, I had an unforgettable experience when I visited Malibu Creek State Park. That’s where they filmed many of the outdoor scenes from “M*A*S*H”, a show I absolutely love! In fact, they recreated the set for fans like me to enjoy. It was like stepping into the TV show itself. What an amazing moment for any M*A*S*H fan!

That same year, Swit expressed to The Times his excitement about being recognized in such a manner. In essence, he felt that the accomplishment they achieved was particularly significant because it managed to unite everyone. He also believed that this honor would further foster unity among people.

However, despite four nods from the Golden Globes for my work on “M*A*S*H,” I didn’t manage to bring home one of those prestigious statuettes.

In 1989, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located close to where Amoeba Music currently resides.

A compassionate individual named Swit established the SwitHeart Animal Alliance, a charity dedicated to stopping animal abuse and alleviating animal distress. This alliance collaborated with numerous non-profit organizations and initiatives to safeguard, rescue, educate, and nurture animals, as well as conserve their natural habitats.
