Lords of the Fallen Publisher CI Games States it Won’t Incorporate ‘Social or Political Agendas’ into Future Games
CI Games, the company responsible for publishing Lords of the Fallen, has declared they won’t incorporate “any social or political messages” within their games due to the potential for commercial flop. Yet, the statement lacks clarity on precisely what this entails and which specific instances of failure have occurred in these attempts.
Ryan Hill, the Global Marketing Director, noted during an investors’ discussion that certain video games have been incorporating social or political messages within their gameplay lately. However, it seems that many players are not receptive to this, and consequently, several high-profile releases have struggled financially over the past year. (Source: Strefa Inwestorów)
Going forward, our games will continue to be designed for maximum fun and profitability without incorporating social or political entities. This is because we’ve noticed the potential risks associated with such integrations,” Hill stated when asked about the company’s position on diversity, equity, and inclusion within their gaming content.
According to PC Gamer, it’s a rather uninformed opinion, considering that over 19,000 games on Steam in 2024 didn’t find an audience. For instance, commercial flops like the PS5’s “Concord” failed due to its generic design that made it indistinct, but Hill’s arguments about DEI (Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion) supposedly damaging video games are questionable. They lack concrete evidence and disregard a significant portion of context.
As a gamer, I find it tricky when Hill doesn’t explicitly define DEI in the context of mainstream games. However, we can see its significance by looking at hits like The Last of Us: Part II and God of War Ragnarok, where diverse characters are prominently featured. Interestingly, DEI was brought up as a potential reason for Star Wars Outlaws’ underperformance. Yet, other factors such as Star Wars fatigue, Ubisoft open-world saturation, initial bugs, and entering a competitive genre might have played far more significant roles in its performance.
And, for the record, we thought Star Wars Outlaws was quite marvellous.
