Lorde has sent fans into a frenzy by releasing her first solo single and video in four years.
Ella Yelich-O’Connor, a singer hailing from New Zealand who is popularly known by her stage name, shot parts of her new song’s music video titled ‘What Was That’ during her journey towards performing the single at Washington Square Park.
The video displays Lorde cycling through New York City, and it also features clips from her impromptu concert on Wednesday, which was unexpectedly halted by the NYPD due to the park becoming excessively congested.
Eventually, she appeared two hours later than planned, igniting social media with videos of her dancing to a pre-recorded track, causing quite a stir online.
Lorde’s latest significant music drop, titled “What Was That,” comes after nearly four years since her 2021 album “Solar Power” was released.

In simpler terms, the song with a melodramatic feel seems to offer solutions to the concerns Lorde addressed in a heartfelt letter she wrote to her fans in 2023.
At age 26, the singer circulated a newsletter among her subscribers, called “How I’ve Been, Revised.
In a way that may appear whimsical or effortless to overlook, I compose music not out of mere choice, but as an essential necessity. Each tune I create serves as a magical incantation; an incantation for releasing burdens, an incantation to open hidden doors.
‘There’s actually great beauty in moving with it. But sometimes I’m sick of being with myself.’
Lorde then said she wished she could turn back the clock and she had stopped taking her medication.
Without directly referring to it in the letter, there was widespread speculation among fans that her break-up with her boyfriend, music executive Justin Warren, might have been implied.
The pair had been linked together since 2015.
In the chorus of “What Was That,” it seems as if Lorde is contemplating the demise of a stormy romance.

‘MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up,’ she sings.
‘We kissed for hours straight, well, baby, what was that?
‘I remember sayin’ then, “This is the best cigarette of my life”.
To be honest, you remind me of the Indio Haze – when I’m surrounded by its enveloping cloud, I feel like I’m lost in a desert sandstorm. However, back then, I didn’t realize that you wouldn’t provide all that I needed.
‘Oh since l was seventeen, I gave you everything.
‘Now, we wake from a dream, well, baby, what was that?’
Over the past while, the reclusive pop sensation has revealed only a handful of tidbits to her followers. However, her public presence has been notably increased lately due to her joint project with Charli XCX titled ‘Girl So Confusing’.
At the beginning of this month, Lorde teamed up with Charli to perform their song during the initial weekend of the Coachella festival.
The release of the single on Friday quickly send Lorde’s fans into a meltdown on social media.
‘This is soooooo 2014 of you,’ the top comment reads.
