Lord Of The Rings New Open World RPG Release Date Is A Way Off

Fans of both the Kingdom Come and The Lord of the Rings series received exciting news last week: Warhorse Studios is creating a new Kingdom Come game and an open-world RPG set in Middle-earth. Building on the success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Warhorse is capitalizing on its momentum. It will be fascinating to see how a developer known for realistic gameplay approaches such a beloved fantasy world.

Of course, when these games will launch is another question entirely, and it seems as if we have recently received an answer regarding one of them. Warhorse’s open-world Middle-earth RPG is sure to be a massive undertaking for the studio, and, with a whole other open-world RPG it is also working on and releasing first, Frodo and Sam could probably travel back and forth from the Shire to Mordor several times before it arrives.

During a recent YouTube livestream, Warhorse revealed that their new “Kingdom Come” game will be an open-world RPG. According to communications director Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, the game is planned for release within the next fiscal year, meaning players can likely expect it sometime in the next year or two. While this might be sooner than some fans anticipated, it still means a wait of at least a year before the game is available.

Warhorse’s priority, being its original Kingdom Come series, is logical, and not announcing a tentative release window for its Middle-earth game is brilliant. Fans of Warhorse will be pleased to be receiving a new Kingdom Come game so soon, relatively speaking, and it would be in all Lord of the Rings fans’ best interests if Warhorse takes as much time as possible to ensure that it does not squander this opportunity.

Warhorse hasn’t shared many details about their upcoming Middle-earth game, except that it will be an open-world RPG – the type of game they’re known for. However, the fact that they call it a “Middle-earth” game, rather than a “Lord of the Rings” game, suggests it won’t directly retell the story of the books or films. It might not even use familiar characters or imagery from those sources, and could explore a different part of Tolkien’s world.

A truly open-world RPG set in Middle-earth, where players create their own character and experience a new story, could be exactly what fans of The Lord of the Rings have been waiting for – similar to the success of Hogwarts Legacy with the Harry Potter universe. However, even if everything goes well, we likely won’t see or hear about Warhorse’s Middle-earth game until late 2028 or early 2029, and that’s a hopeful estimate.
