Loose Women star rushed to hospital after collapsing
Andrea McLean, a host on the show “Loose Women“, shared experiences of being unexpectedly admitted to the hospital due to pneumonia and fighting against sepsis.
The television presenter reminisced about her recent hospital stay, which occurred following a bout of the flu in December, through her Substack newsletter titled “Reflections.
In her own words: “Just like many others, I tried to tough it out, believing it would get better within a week’s time.” However, after seven days of perspiring and shivering, with a high fever, chills, and pains in both my chest and back, my urine turned brown.
In the bathroom, I suddenly fell to the floor and remained there for about an hour. It wasn’t until my husband checked on me that he discovered me in the same position as those commercials showing older adults lying down.
“We rang the GP who told us to call 999 immediately.”
Following immediate admission to the Emergency Room for diagnosis, McLean was discovered to have severe pneumonia, acute kidney failure, and sepsis. As a result, she was moved to a critical care evaluation unit.
She remembered enduring near-continuous discomfort for the two days and nights she stayed there, as well as an overwhelming onslaught of stimuli from the screams, shouts, sounds, and smells.
Later on, McLean was moved to a ward specializing in respiratory care, and it was there that a nurse inquired about her wellbeing.
She explained, “It’s like maintaining a strong facade, but when someone kindly asks about my wellbeing, I suddenly lose composure.” And that’s exactly what transpired.
Instead of my typical response, “I’m fine,” considering the presence of those truly ill, I shared my actual feelings with them.
Suddenly, tears streamed down my face, marking the first time since my hospitalization that I wept. Unable to articulate why, I simply expressed, ‘It’s just so loud, the lights are overwhelming, and I’m experiencing a great deal of discomfort.’
In her newsletter, McLean mentioned the guests who dropped by to meet the fellow patients on the ward, and discussed instances where some of these visitors even forged friendships among themselves.
Additionally, she contemplated on certain difficult periods within the ward, where patients would sometimes feel distraught or agitated, a common occurrence particularly at nighttime.
After spending five days in the hospital receiving antibiotics, pain relievers, and intravenous fluids for dehydration, doctors concurred that McLean could go back home. However, they stipulated that she should visit the hospital every day for further outpatient care.
She closed her post by thanking her husband Nick Feeney for his support through her illness.
She remembered that he took me home, prepared dinner for everyone, listened as they shared stories about their day, and tucked me in at night. Then, he repeated this routine the following day, and the day after that.
It might not cross your mind how difficult it can be for someone else to care for you, when you’re so accustomed to taking care of yourself.
However, it wasn’t until a few days ago that Nick’s plans for 2025 truly began, as I had regained enough strength and stability to spend entire days at home without worry of sudden illness.
Five weeks after being admitted to the hospital, McLean expresses that life hasn’t returned to its usual state for her, even though she admits that there are aspects of life that are simply out of our control.
She mentioned that things came to a pause for some time, but it was temporary. She isn’t fully recovered yet, but she will get there eventually, and unfortunately, she can’t expedite her recovery more than what natural time requires.
