Looks like [SPOILER] was going to be in the House of the Dragon finale but got cut

As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I must say that the finale of House of the Dragon left me with a mix of anticipation and curiosity. The impending clash of armies in the Riverlands, led by the likes of Daemon Targaryen, the Lannisters, and the Northerners, has set the stage for an epic battle that I can hardly wait to witness.

Last night saw the conclusion of Season 2 for ‘House of the Dragon’. The final episode culminated with multiple armies on the move, some of which are heading towards a confrontation in the Riverlands. There’s the army led by Daemon Targaryen assembled at Harrenhal, an approaching Lannister force coming from the west, and the Northerners marching through the Twins. Remember, Jace (Harry Collett), Rhaenyra’s son, previously secured safe passage for them across that large bridge earlier in this season.

It turns out that among the two armies, one was under the command of a specific character who ended up being left out in the final version. Proceed with caution if you prefer to steer clear of SPOILERS!

Looks like [SPOILER] was going to be in the House of the Dragon finale but got cut

In case you remember, the second season of House of the Dragon started with Jace and Lord Cregan Stark (played by Tom Taylor) walking along the Wall in the North. At that moment, Cregan was the lord of Winterfell. He pledged to send soldiers south to aid Rhaenyra in her bid to seize the Iron Throne from her half-brother Aegon. However, all he could afford to dispatch were elderly men who might struggle during the impending winter. Jace figured, “Well, it’s better than nothing,” and agreed.

In George R.R. Martin’s novel “Fire & Blood”, the soldiers you see marching towards the Riverlands through the Twins in the season finale are called the Winter Wolves. However, it’s important to note that Cregan Stark is not part of this particular group. Interestingly, there’s a backstage photo circulating showing that Cregan was initially intended to walk across the bridge with his men during this scene.

Why was Cregan Stark edited out of the House of the Dragon season 2 finale?

So they filmed Cregan crossing the Twins but didn’t include it in the final episode. Why?

Indeed, it’s important to mention that, as per “Fire & Blood”, Cregan Stark remains in the North during this part of the story, as he has numerous responsibilities there. However, he does make his way south later on, but not immediately. Therefore, omitting him from this scene is consistent with the original content.

Indeed, the television series has made numerous alterations to the original book, making it debatable to label it an adaptation entirely. Yet, despite these differences, I find myself accepting it. It’s possible that they filmed the Cregan scene as a backup or for future use, but also kept the option open to cut it if necessary. In the end, they might have decided to include it.

As someone who has been a devoted fan of Game of Thrones and its prequel series House of the Dragon since their inception, I can confidently say that the anticipation for Cregan’s return and the third season airing is palpable among fans like myself. Having patiently waited years for each new installment, I am well-acquainted with the trials and tribulations that come with such long waits. Yet, as we eagerly await Cregan’s reappearance and the third season of House of the Dragon, I remain confident in the quality of storytelling and production that has made these series standouts in the realm of fantasy television. Despite the seemingly endless wait, I am certain it will be worth it when we finally witness the continuation of this captivating tale set within the dramatic world of Westeros.
