Longtime James Bond producers give up creative control to Amazon MGM Studios

It’s an end of an era for the man who likes his cocktails shaken, not stirred.

On Thursday, it was announced that Amazon has reached an agreement with Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, long-term producers of the James Bond film franchise, granting Amazon creative authority over the popular spy series.

The involved entities have established a fresh collaboration, which serves as the custodian of James Bond’s creative rights. The Broccoli and Wilson families, who inherit the franchise from Albert R. Broccoli, will continue to hold joint ownership.

In 2022, Amazon took over MGM Studios, the studio known for producing the iconic character James Bond. This acquisition provides Amazon with an extensive library of around 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV series.

In a creative sense, I’ve always found myself tightly tethered to the watchful guardianship of the Broccoli family, whose unyielding devotion to the literary world of Ian Fleming’s novels has been nothing short of inspiring and protective.

Movies

Behind 007, Daniel Craig has found himself at the heart of yet another hit film series. However, let’s avoid implying that he deliberately plotted his way into this ‘Glass Onion’ role.

That will change with the new deal.

In her statement, Barbara Broccoli expressed that her life’s work has revolved around preserving and expanding the outstanding heritage bestowed upon Michael and herself by their father, film producer Cubby Broccoli. With the end of ‘No Time to Die’ and Michael choosing to step away from the movies, she feels it is now appropriate to channel her energies towards her other endeavors.

In 2021, the latest James Bond film titled “No Time to Die” hit the screens, marking the conclusive chapter for Daniel Craig’s portrayal of the martini-loving character. This movie earned a total of $774 million at the worldwide box office.

Since that time, there haven’t been many updates regarding Bond’s forthcoming story. Neither has a new 007 been officially unveiled, despite numerous rumors and anticipation swirling around.

There have been proposals and suggestions regarding modifications to the Bond character (such as casting a woman) and potential new ventures (like creating an Amazon Prime series), but some options were dismissed when it comes to decisions made by the family who hold control over the franchise.

“He can be of any color, but he is male,” said Broccoli, in a 2020 interview with Variety.
