Longlegs left us with 5 unresolved mysteries, here are our theories

As a gamer and horror movie enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of suspenseful films, but “Longlegs” has left me utterly intrigued and puzzled. The ambiguity of this chilling original horror flick has kept me pondering over several burning questions that the movie leaves unanswered.

As a dedicated gamer and horror enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the latest original horror film that has left audiences both captivated and terrified. If you haven’t had the chance to witness Oz Perkins’ masterpiece, “Longlegs,” in theaters yet, I strongly urge you to turn away from this article now, as it contains spoilers that could ruin the chilling experience awaiting you.

After watching the movie with its enigmatic plotline, several intriguing questions remained unanswered or without a clear solution. Here are some hypotheses I’ve thought of, but keep in mind that they haven’t been verified as accurate by any means.

Longlegs left us with 5 unresolved mysteries, here are our theories

Is Lee psychic?

In the opening stages of “Longlegs,” I come across a situation where the bureau puts my intuition to the test by asking me, as Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe), to identify which house belongs to our suspect without conducting any investigation. Later on in the game, Agent Carter (Blair Underwood) expresses his admiration for my performance, mentioning that I aced the test eight times. However, I point out that I also stumbled and failed eight times during the process, keeping the uncertainty surrounding my abilities alive within the narrative.

Although we don’t have definitive proof about Lee’s supernatural abilities, the movie “Longlegs” provides sufficient hints for us to form our own opinions. In the third act, it is disclosed that Lee had been cohabiting with Dale Cobble, who was disguised as Longlegs, for a considerable amount of time. Unbeknownst to her, he resided in the basement of her childhood house and manufactured his satanic dolls in secrecy, directly beneath her living quarters.

The closeness of Lee to Cobble’s black magic rituals and devil worship in the basement could have influenced her. It’s plausible that the Lee doll played a role in enhancing the real Lee’s abilities. Initially, Cobble constructed the Lee doll as part of a plan to make both mother and daughter (Ruth, portrayed by Alicia Witt) his victims. However, after Ruth negotiated for her daughter’s safety, the enchantment within the doll remained and could have affected Lee if left untouched.

As a gamer, I can’t help but ponder over the intriguing implications of the Ruby Carter doll remaining untouched in the film’s thrilling finale.

How did Longlegs choose his victims?

The film doesn’t provide information on how or why Cobble chooses the particular families to attack. It’s uncertain if he is the one making the selections; it could be Satan himself who is determining the targets. However, the massacres consistently take place on the 14th of a month, while some related incidents occur on other dates such as the 12th or 13th.

Cobble deliberately employs an algorithm that generates an inverted triangle, a symbol believed to summon the Devil. This revelation is shared with Carter by Lee, who suspects that she and her mother were initially targeted on the day of the infamous 1970s events due to their shared birthday on the 14th. However, their lives were spared after Ruth struck a deal instead. The subsequent murders adhere to this pattern as they are connected to Lee’s birthdate.

The flashback reveals an unusual event at Ruth’s house that day – Cobble restraining Ruth on the floor. His presence contradicts the pattern of the subsequent killings.

What was really inside those metal balls?

One intriguing enigma surrounding the film unfolds as an integral part of the narrative itself. The initial encounter with one of those metallic orbs occurs when the medical examiner extracts it from the doll discovered on the Camera family estate by Carter and Lee. He explains that it has an empty core, but its presence induces him to hear his former spouse’s voice instead.

The Medical Examiner (ME) produces a foreboding beep when pressing a handheld ultrasound device against the orb. This sound triggers unsettling visions of serpents and other cryptic symbols for Lee, suggesting that the murderer, referred to as “Longlegs,” imparts some form of dark magic into these orbs during Cobble’s doll-making process.

As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: The enchanted core within the doll’s skull plays a pivotal role in each grisly demise, luring the family into a hypnotic state before unleashing the father’s inner homicidal tendencies. There’s no concrete explanation for what exactly inhabits these dolls, but it’s hinted at being something sinister, dark, and beyond our comprehension. I shared some of my thoughts on the nature of the dolls and the overall conclusion of the movie in this post.

Why did Cobble communicate via codes and symbols?

The promotion for Neon’s film intensely relied on the enigmatic messages left by the serial killer, filled with ominous symbols and concealed menaces, echoing the modus operandi of the real-life Zodiac killer. However, in this cinematic portrayal, these codes primarily serve to amplify Cobble’s fascination with the occult, acting as chilling reminders of the notorious cryptic communications employed by the real murderer.

Why did Agent Carter have a giant portrait of Bill Clinton in his office?

As a fan of Oz Perkins’ unique storytelling, I can’t help but appreciate how deliberately he set the scene for his film. He left no doubt in my mind that the story unfolded during Clinton’s presidency. The prominent placement of Clinton’s portrait in key scenes where Lee and Carter held conversations in the Oval Office felt almost satirical, adding to the overall sense of unease and dark humor that pervaded the film.
