Longlegs director explains why the killer is called Longlegs
“Without a doubt, ‘Longlegs‘ is this summer’s terrifying standout movie. Both critics and audiences have raved about it, considering it among the finest films released in 2023.”
I’m a big fan of the chilling thriller where I get to see Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe in action. In this heart-pounding tale, I follow the infamous serial killer Longlegs, portrayed brilliantly by Cage, as he eludes capture by relentless FBI agent Lee Harker, played by Monroe.
As the investigation grows more complex with hidden clues emerging, Harker discovers a chilling connection to the murderer and races against time to stop another tragic death in the family.
The movie’s popularity has grown significantly through buzz and a powerful viral promotion effort. Moreover, Osgood Perkins cleverly chose a fitting name for the film’s notorious killer.
“Longlegs” just feels creepy and leaves you unsettled.
Now, in an interview with Variety, Perkins has explained how he came up with the name.
“We writers just like words. We like how certain words sound and look and shape and feel,” he said.
I can relate to its spindly legs and uneasy vibe, yet it brings me back to the ’70s in a nostalgic way. It’s as if I’m listening to an old Led Zeppelin tune or admiring the art on the side of a vintage van. This term seems almost forgotten in today’s language, adding to its intrigue and charm.
In his own words, Perkins expressed that the film occupied an intriguing, yet puzzling spot for him. Its enigmatic nature left certain aspects unexplored, refusing to fit neatly into comprehension. This ambiguity piqued his interest and fueled his curiosity – a vital element, according to him.
Last week, Longlegs hit US cinemas and set an impressive new record with its box-office debut.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: The movie’s opening weekend in the US brought in an impressive $22.6 million at the box office, leaving romantic comedy “Fly Me to the Moon” in the dust.
As a passionate gamer, I’d put it this way: When Neon brought that figure into their gaming library last weekend, it smashed their previous records for US opening sales. They snagged it for under ten million bucks and invested around the same amount in its marketing and distribution campaign.
Longlegs is out now in cinemas.
