Longlegs director explains “tragic” ending and shock death

As a huge fan of thriller movies, I was absolutely captivated by “Longlegs.” The film’s dark and twisted narrative kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Director Osgood Perkins’ decision to give the movie a tragic ending truly added to the eerie and unsettling atmosphere that permeated throughout.

Longlegs spoilers follow.

Longlegs was always going to have a “tragic” ending, according to director Osgood Perkins.

In a comparison to “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film unfolds the story of FBI agent Lee Harker, portrayed by Maika Monroe in “It Follows.” Her mission is to track down a Satanic murderer referred to as Longlegs, played by Nicolas Cage.

Over the past few decades, this individual was responsible for taking the lives of many families, yet the encoded messages they left behind continue to confound investigators.

Towards the film’s conclusion, Harker uncovers the means by which Longlegs committed the killings, along with the intricate links between her past and her mom (portrayed by Alicia Witt).

However, in the last scene, Harker fails to end the Satanic forces at play.

In an interview with Variety, Perkins shared, “The story’s conclusion was ever so intended to be poignantly sad.”

On a smaller scale, the devil emerges victorious once more. It’s an amusing aspect of portraying the devil as the antagonist that he rarely seeks global conquest.

“The devil often thinks, ‘I’ll cause trouble for this person, destroy this family, harm this child, torment this priest.’ Such destructive intentions are common for him, not grandiose plans like destroying the Vatican.”

Based on my experience as a storyteller and having seen my fair share of horror movies, I believe that the devil is more complex than just being a fearsome figure. In the case of Lee Harker from the movie, I think that her encounter with the devil was not just a terrifying ordeal, but also had elements of amusement and playfulness.

As a devoted fan, I can share that Perkins elucidated on the reasons behind Nicolas Cage’s character, Longlegs, being executed prior to the film’s conclusion. This revelation unfolded in an intense interrogation scene that left me utterly captivated.

He explained that they deliberately drew inspiration from their sources to create a pop art masterpiece. Whenever possible, they borrowed techniques from famous serial killer films.

The director acknowledges that David Fincher’s 1995 thriller “Se7en” significantly influenced his decisions concerning the portrayal of the Longlegs character in the narrative.

“Kevin Spacey’s character is consistently felt throughout, much like Cage’s in certain aspects. There’s a sense of something ominous lurking. Yet, when confronting this character head-on, the encounter can feel underwhelming. However, Spacey shines brilliantly in ‘Se7en.’ I’m fond of how John Doe willingly surrendered himself.”

“Our intention was not to steal, but rather to draw inspiration from what already existed.”

In the promotion for the film, the reveal of Nicolas Cage’s transformation into Longlegs was deliberately withheld to create a shocking effect for audiences during the actual screening. Maika Monroe, one of the co-stars, shared that she had a strong, physical response when first seeing Cage in his costume.

Monroe expressed her astonishment, “The image in my mind was far more magnificent than reality ever could be, particularly his stunning performance. It was truly awe-inspiring.”

After its successful first weekend, the film “Longlegs” raked in an impressive $22.6 million at the US box office. This opening weekend earnings surpassed Neon’s previous record for their largest US opening.

Longlegs is now out in cinemas.
