Lola Young has shocked fans after they discovered she has a very famous family member.

At 24, this artist has been part of the music scene for quite some time, yet it was only recently that her career experienced a significant boost. This surge in popularity can be attributed to her breakout song “Messy,” which became viral, dominated the charts, and captured the attention of TikTok users worldwide.

Her rise to fame has sparked curiosity, with many eager to learn more about her journey. 

Lola began writing songs at just 11 years old and won a national open mic competition by 13.

She perfected her skills at the renowned Brit School situated in Croydon, a place famous for nurturing talents such as Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Fans may also recognise her voice from the 2021 John Lewis Christmas advert, The Unexpected Guest.

More recently, she became the youngest British female artist since Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” in 2017, to achieve a solo number-one single on the charts.

Her achievements keep expanding significantly, as she sells out shows in the UK and USA, is scheduled to make her first appearance at Coachella, and has been nominated for the title of Best Pop Artist at the 2024 BRIT Awards.

Now signed to Island Records, Lola is backed by some of the biggest names in the music industry. 

Last year saw the release of her first album titled “My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely”. More recently, she unveiled her newest work, entitled “This Wasn’t Intended for You.

However, it’s recently come to light that Lola shares an unexpected familial tie with Julia Donaldson, as her aunt.

76-year-old Julia is well-known for penning the cherished children’s book The Gruffalo as well as numerous other top-selling publications.

This woman is a renowned Scottish writer, who achieved initial acclaim during the late ’90s and later served as the Children’s Laureate from 2011 to 2013.

Prior to becoming a renowned author, she wrote songs for children’s television programs, demonstrating her knack for storytelling through melodies.

Now based in West Sussex, Julia was awarded an MBE in 2011 for her contributions to literature.

After discovering the family connection, fans took to X, formerly Twitter to share their thoughts.

It seems this woman has unexpectedly emerged over the past couple of months, prompting me to do a quick search. Her aunt is the author of ‘The Gruffalo’, and she attended the BRIT school. Ha-ha, apparently things haven’t changed much!

Speaking of the Gruffalo, if your relative authored this popular character, you’ve essentially hit the jackpot. The Gruffalo is a household name, universally recognized.

If, unexpectedly, Lola Young made a splash in the literary scene with a bestseller, I must admit, her aunt’s renowned authorship might provoke a bit of ‘nepotism baby’ scrutiny. However, it’s crucial to remember that her success on TikTok is more likely due to the captivating nature of The Gruffalo rather than any direct assistance.

Lola Young isn’t significantly more of a ‘nepo baby’ just because Julia Donaldson is her aunt, considering that many people who enter the arts have such connections. This point seems to overshadow the main issue: The Gruffalo was genuinely scary for me as a child.

In just two years, I’ve become familiar with Lola’s music, not as if it were just last night. This is thanks to her persistent efforts to promote herself. Interestingly enough, the TikTok algorithm proved effective in helping her find an audience that appreciates her music. Regarding her aunt’s British book, it seems she could not care less about it.

Previously, Lola expressed that growing up in an artistic family gave her the confidence that pursuing a career in music was attainable.

She pointed out that her upbringing was steeped in creativity, fostering the courage within her to chase her personal artistic dreams.

She shared with The Telegraph that growing up in a creative household provided significant assistance, as they recognized that a career in music isn’t just a hobby but a genuine profession where one can earn income.

‘I never had a plan B,’ she added.
