Lola Young Slams ADHD Glamorization
She rose to global fame this year with her hit song, Messy.
However, Lola Young, a graduate from The Brit School, is using social media platforms to advocate for Concerta, the ADHD medication she uses, as it helps her “perceive clutter more clearly so that she can tidy up.
Lola, aged 24 and a nominee for two BRIT Awards, pointed out that the portrayal of Hyperactivity Disorder (HD) is being excessively glamorized. She noted that it seems like Generation Z is rapidly adopting this trend, with many jumping on the bandwagon without fully understanding it.
However, she contended that the increased emphasis on ADHD in recent times has not only diminished the stigma but also educated people about its impact on the brain.
The pop artist from Croydon shared: “About six months ago, I began using Concerta, and it has truly transformed my life. It’s affected the way I think, how I perceive disorder, and now I find it easier to clean up. I feel significantly more content.
‘Taking Concerta has been truly remarkable for me, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s essential that we challenge the perception surrounding mental health medication use, as people often take medication for physical conditions like heart disease, so mental health should be no exception.’
‘So we should make sure physical health and mental health are viewed on par.’

Lola also emphasised the importance of getting a diagnosis of ADHD can ‘change your life’.
She suggested: ‘Receiving a diagnosis can provide clarity, and I’d advise considering the same medication that I take, called Concerta.’
Concerta is a medication that enhances focus and reduces impulsivity and excessive activity in individuals diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Individuals using this substance are likely to experience heightened happiness, increased vitality, and improved mental clarity and attentiveness.
It is estimated 230,000 people in the UK are taking the medication for ADHD.
Lola disclosed that she composed the popular song “Messy” right in her own bedroom, adding: “There’s been talk that it’s inspired by my family situation.
‘It’s massively about some close family but it’s a combination.
Speaking candidly, I find that my disorganized state reflects my personality quite well. Truth be told, I haven’t ever had the opportunity to handle a broom, and as a result, my surroundings tend to mirror this chaos. It’s an accurate depiction of who I am.

During a 2022 interview, Lola openly discussed her struggle with a seldom-encountered schizoaffective condition. This health issue had historically caused periods of extreme excitement and necessitated hospital stays for her.
At the age of 17, she uncovered this finding while dealing with symptoms she believed were related to clinical depression and bipolar disorder.
She shared that she had uncles from both sides of her family who suffered from schizophrenia, and sadly, they both passed away under tragic circumstances.
Lola thought it’s possible that her current state might be partly caused by using marijuana to cope with past traumatic experiences from her childhood, which she preferred not to discuss further.
She typically notices a potential manic episode arising from odd thoughts, yet she often manages medication to control the situation, although there have been instances when she was caught off guard and hospitalized.
Lola openly acknowledged that the erratic nature of her health condition often hinders her ability to go on tours, and occasionally, she experiences prolonged periods of heightened moods lasting nearly a month, accompanied by extended sleepless stretches.
Lola expressed that her health condition often triggers feelings of guilt and embarrassment within her, and she frequently experiences a sense of isolation following instances where she’s become ill in the presence of others.
