LoL x Linkin Park Worlds 2024 anthem faces criticism
As a dedicated League of Legends fan with years of investment in its rich tapestry of stories and personalities, I find myself deeply disappointed by the Worlds 2024 anthem. The collaboration with Linkin Park was undoubtedly exciting, but the execution leaves much to be desired, particularly in the narrative department.
Some members of the League of Legends community have voiced their dissatisfaction over the perceived superficial storyline in the Worlds 2024 anthem, with a few even labeling it as disregardful towards T1.
The hit anthem for League of Legends (LoL) Worlds 2024, titled “Heavy is The Crown,” was unveiled on September 24, in partnership with the band Linkin Park. This collaboration sparked significant excitement within the community due to several factors: Linkin Park’s reunion and the announcement of a new lead vocalist, who will be joining them for a global tour.
As the release approached, League of Legends had been hinting at Linkin Park contributing to this year’s Worlds anthem through engaging social media posts, fueling speculation and generating considerable excitement. The song’s debut on YouTube was said to attract around 200,000 simultaneous viewers and amass nearly 10 million views within the first day.
On the other hand, responses from the community have varied, often showing displeasure, especially concerning the music video. Remarks on YouTube and social networks highlight their frustration over how the story of T1 as the 2023 World Champions was represented in the video.
Shallow narrative compared to previous anthems
Some critics within the community have pointed out that the music video for this release doesn’t delve as deeply into a compelling narrative like the “GODS” music video by NewJeens, which showcased Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu’s career highs and lows. Fans think there are numerous untold stories about T1, especially since they’ve just won their fourth championship title after a seven-year wait.
While some viewers are expressing dissatisfaction over the predominant focus on Linkin Park in the video, they had anticipated more attention to be given to Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok and T1. This differs from previous League of Legends (LoL) productions, such as “Rise” in Worlds 2018 that highlighted Kang “Ambition” Chan-yong and the anthem for 2023 that showcased Deft.
At the 2023 World Championship, T1’s experience was nothing less than thrilling, being the lone LCK team among four powerful LPL teams on their home ground. The tournament brimmed with jaw-dropping instances – Faker’s prescient Azir ultimate countering JDG Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk’s Flash, Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong’s daring 1v2 Varus play against JDG Ruler and Top Esports 369, as well as his intense 1v1 encounter with LNG GALA. Other standout moments included Mun “Oner” Hyeon-jun’s dynamic Rell Flash ultimate clash with JDG MISSING’s Ashe arrow, and Choi “Zeus” Woo-je’s remarkable 1v4 showdown against WBG in the final match of Worlds 2023 – moments that could have made it into the anthem for Worlds 2024.
Fans of LoL esports and T1 are eagerly anticipating the anthem for this year’s Worlds tournament, with heightened expectations following the powerful previews featuring T1 and Faker in the Worlds 2023 teasers. Many spectators hope that Riot Games will produce a more impactful storyline, much like their past works such as “Faker: A Decade of Greatness” and “Hall of Legends: Faker.
Featured players are hard to distinguish
I’ve been noticing some feedback about the way gamers are portrayed in this video game, particularly those hailing from the Peacekeeper Elite League (PEL) and LCK regions. Apart from the five T1 players, it seems viewers are finding it challenging to tell the difference between many of the showcased players and Deft, which is causing a bit of confusion among fans like me.
Regardless of any criticism directed towards the music video, fans have applauded the song for its lively ambiance. Linkin Park will be taking the stage to perform “Heavy is The Crown” at the League of Legends Worlds 2024 Grand Finals on November 2, held at the O2 Arena in London, England.
