LoL Esports coaches can now speak in-game with “Coach Comms”

LoL Esports is now letting coaches talk to their players during matches with a new feature called Coach Comms.

Okay, so Riot’s dropping a huge update for pro League of Legends – it’s called Coach Comms. Basically, coaches can now talk to their players during the game, which is a first for LoL Esports. I’m really curious to see how this changes things, and here’s the rundown on what we know so far.

Professional League of Legends tournaments don’t change often, but when they do, the updates usually have a big effect. Things like adding more bans, switching away from a final game decided by Blind Pick, and the recent introduction of Fearless Draft have all noticeably altered how the game is played at a professional level.

Coach Comms in LoL Esports

In the past, coaches were only able to talk to players during the draft and between games in a series. League of Legends Esports officials explained that this restriction made it difficult to change strategies quickly during a match.

Coaches can now communicate with players during games using Coach Comms, though there are some restrictions in place. This new feature will allow for quicker strategic adjustments, better in-game decisions, and give coaches a more immediate influence on how the game unfolds.

Coach communication will only be available during the regular season of LCP Split 1 and the group stage of the LCK Cup. It won’t be available during the play-ins or playoffs of either tournament.

Other LoL Esports regions will not have this system just yet.

While a key goal of Coach Comms is to find new ways to connect with fans, the audio won’t be included in the live broadcast.

How does Coach Comms work?

Coaches can use team communication up to three times during a game, with each session lasting 45 seconds. Using this feature won’t stop the game clock.

The enemy team will not be notified when Coach Comms is activated.

Before each game, teams can choose coaches to use a special communication system called Coach Comms. These chosen coaches must stay in a specific area, will only see the game from the team’s viewpoint, and can’t communicate with anyone outside the team. Teams can change which coaches participate after each game. Once a coach has used the system three times, they are free to leave the designated area.

LCP teams can nominate one member of their coaching staff, while LCK teams may nominate two.

This prevents coaches from unintentionally revealing information they shouldn’t, because they typically see the entire map without the usual limitations. They can always see where enemy players are, where wards are placed, and how long it takes for abilities to recharge.

Coach Comms is optional, and teams must confirm whether to use it or not before the game begins.

Will Coach Comms be in other regions?

The teams responsible for LCP and LCK will evaluate how the new system is performing. They’ll consider how teams are using it, what players and fans think, and whether it’s running smoothly. Based on this review, they’ll decide if they should roll it out more widely.
