LoL devs prepare Mel micropatch as she takes over the Rift a day after arriving
A micropatch to nerf LoL’s newest champion will be rolled out today.
Mel Medarda from Arcane has joined League of Legends and has already left a noticeable mark. Although she hasn’t been quite as powerful as some of the more recent champions, the developers are fine-tuning her abilities through minor adjustments in a small update on January 24th.
The introduction of Mel in The Rift has been positively received by developers, yet, similar to any fresh champion, players may require some time and a minor update (micropatch) to fully appreciate that she’s suitable for ranked matches.
Three of Mel’s abilities cop damage nerfs via day two LoL micropatch
On January 24th, Riot developer Matt Leung-Harrison unveiled the Mel micropatch for League of Legends late in the day. “The response from players has been wonderful,” Phroxzon commented, however, he did mention that she seemed to be a bit overpowered.
According to Phroxzon, he believes there’s a fairly significant yet easy-to-grasp advantage in the matchup curve, and she seems to gain an unfairly large amount of benefit from facing off against popular champions such as Ahri, Miss Fortune, and Lux.
As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase the dev’s approach to balancing her initial power: A significant adjustment to her overall abilities, with a noticeable reduction in their effectiveness. Specifically, my favorite ability, Searing Brilliance (Passive), has seen its flat AP damage ratio reduced from 25% to 10%. The first shot of Radiant Volley (Q) remains unchanged early on but deals slightly less later. Lastly, the mighty Golden Eclipse (Ultimate) took a hit, with both its base and scaling AP damage decreasing by approximately 20%.
Phroxzon commented, “We’re quite satisfied with her spell power distribution, but she seems excessively potent in general, especially when using R abilities that aren’t heavily stacked. Her passive, which aids in last-hitting, is providing more gold for typical players than we anticipated.
As reported by U.GG, she achieved a 51.02% victory rate just one day after joining League of Legends (LoL), which is significantly lower than champions like Smolder and Aurora when they first debuted. Her high ban rate of 32% gives us some insight into player sentiment towards Mel, but it’s expected to decrease once the upcoming nerfs are implemented.
