In simpler terms, Owen Wilson’s character in TVA (Time Variance Authority) from Loki Season 2 was initially designed to subtly reference Kang the Conqueror, a notable Marvel Comics villain. However, the way Kang has been integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t followed the original plans. But this doesn’t change the fact that Kang, portrayed by Jonathan Majors, has left an indelible mark on the projects he eventually became part of.
Disney+’s time-traveling streaming show, “Loki“, featured him prominently as the powerful guardian of the Marvel Multiverse for much of its run. The series presented several iterations of the Kang character, but surprisingly, the famous, blue-faced Kang the Conqueror Variant was not among them.
A new artwork published in the ‘Marvel Studios’ Loki: Season Two – The Art of The Series’ book, which was recently shared by The Artbook Collector on YouTube, includes an exclusive Kang the Conqueror Easter egg that didn’t appear in the show’s final version.

The photos depict various interpretations of the TVA temporal core suit worn by Owen Wilson’s character Mobius, during the finale of Loki Season 2. Unlike the transparent helmets seen in the show, this one has a shimmery, violet-blue tint to it.

As suggested by the work of concept artist Jeff Simpson, it appears that this design element is a nod towards Kang’s distinctive blue and purple headgear as seen in his comic book appearances. He aimed to infuse this characteristic look into the multiverse-traversing technology of the TVA (Temporal Variance Authority).

In the book, Simpson mused about the possibility of subtly incorporating some elements from Kang’s distinctive suit, such as the visor and helmet, into the design. He further suggested that this could potentially give the impression that Kang had always been donning a similar suit of his own.
Our initial helmet designs were overly complex and visually cluttered. To give a more vintage feel, I propose we use the design of an old deep-sea diver’s helmet instead of something excessively high-tech. This would align better with the TVA’s retro aesthetic. Moreover, I thought it might be clever to incorporate elements from Kang’s distinctive suit, such as the visor and helmet, to suggest that he has always been wearing a specialized version of this suit for radiation protection or similar purposes.
In the second season of the show Loki, the Time Variance Authority’s (TVA) temporal core suit deviated from its original design, adopting a bulky appearance reminiscent of a space explorer’s suit, rather than the sleek style influenced by Kang, as seen in the Simpson’s depiction.

In the sole appearance of Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Jonathan Majors’ multidimensional antagonist donned a suit reminiscent of Simpson’s description, featuring a helmet and visor that bear a strong resemblance to the helmet design from his Loki Season 2 concept art.

The entire second season of “Loki” is currently available for streaming on Disney+. Unfortunately, Kang the Conqueror’s arc as a major threat to the Avengers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has concluded. In late 2023, actor Jonathan Majors was dismissed from Marvel Studios’ expansive superhero universe following his conviction for reckless assault and harassment charges in New York. Despite these legal issues, Majors still made an appearance in “Loki” Season 2, marking it as his final role within the franchise. The series starring Tom Hiddleston remains his swan song within the MCU.
What Will Become of Kang in the MCU?
Without a doubt, more Kang-inspired artwork is likely to surface on the internet in the coming years.
It stands to reason that Marvel Studios would have numerous concept designs for the character given their important role in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline.
It’s quite possible that this suit was altered prior to Major’s legal issues in 2023, since most of Season 2 of Loki had already been filmed by then. Despite that, it remains an intriguing artifact from a period when the Multiversal madman played a central role within Marvel’s cinematic universe on screen.
Moving ahead, it’s intriguing to consider how the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) might develop Majors’ Kang character, and whether any future references are made to him.
Initially, it appeared that Kang would be portrayed as the main antagonist in the upcoming fifth Avengers movie; however, the storyline shifted to center around Robert Downey Jr.’s evil Doctor Doom instead. It’s likely that the studio won’t ignore Kang completely, given that both Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars might not be mentioned without reference to this character.
It seems that when Doom enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he may overpower the Council of Kangs, as hinted in Quantumania’s finale. This could demonstrate his immense danger to the Marvel Multiverse.
