Lizzo was dismissed as a potential juror after reporting for jury duty on Wednesday.
Lizzo, the singer behind the hit song “Truth Hurts,” received a notice for jury duty at the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. However, she wasn’t required to serve on a jury.
Brittny Mejia, a Los Angeles Times reporter, tweeted that Lizzo was initially considered as a juror in a case involving an assault on a federal officer. Prosecutors ultimately removed her from the jury pool.
The singer, who recently discussed her first sexual experience, was dedicated to her jury duty. She even posted videos of her outfit for the day and a picture of herself outside the courthouse.
Okay, so it totally makes sense that celebrities can be called for jury duty, right? Like, they’re people too! But honestly, it almost always ends up with them being let go. I mean, can you imagine? Everyone would be so distracted by them being there, and it could totally mess up the trial! Plus, other jurors might be starstruck or biased, so they usually just dismiss them to keep things fair. It’s frustrating, because I’d love to see them serve, but I get why it happens!
The Daily Mail has reached out to Lizzo’s representatives for comment.
People found the thought of Lizzo serving on a jury hilarious, with one person joking that it would be scary to face a sentence handed down by her.
‘Lol having jury duty as a celebrity is so funny,’ another chimed in.
“How did the trial go?” someone asked. “It went really well!” came the reply. Then, jokingly, the person added, “Actually, I’m guilty, but Lizzo was one of the jurors!”
‘Imagine doing jury duty with Lizzo lol.’
Someone wondered if celebrities were still required to serve on juries, and jokingly asked how the other jurors weren’t completely starstruck.
‘Slayed your honor,’ someone else joked.
Lizzo’s previous statements criticizing the police might have contributed to her being let go, particularly because the situation involved an attack on a federal officer.
In 2020, Lizzo joined other public figures in signing a letter that advocated for reducing funding for U.S. police departments.
In June of that year, she also shared her thoughts on Instagram, stating that the idea of defunding the police doesn’t seem so extreme when you consider how long education has been underfunded. She clarified that ‘abolish the police’ doesn’t necessarily mean getting rid of law enforcement altogether.
Defunding the police isn’t about eliminating law enforcement, but rather reallocating some of the massive amount of public funding currently used for policing towards vital services like healthcare, social programs, education, and community support. The goal is to create a better society where law enforcement focuses on its core responsibilities and communities have the resources they need to thrive.
On Wednesday, the singer posted a series of photos and videos on Instagram documenting her day, which included serving on a jury and having dinner. She simply captioned the post, ‘Jury Duty & Dinner.’
In a video taken in her bathroom, Lizzo showed off the elegant all-black outfit she wore to court.
She wore a black top from her Yitty collection with black, custom-made silk pants by Sami Miro.
She finished her outfit with a long black coat from Saint Laurent, a layered Chanel pearl necklace, and black Louboutin heels.
Lizzo also shared a selfie of herself holding her jury summons.
While many A-listers end up getting dismissed from jury duty, it’s not always the case.
In 2004, Oprah Winfrey was a juror in a first-degree murder case in Chicago.
Oprah Winfrey described the experience as a humbling and transformative moment, explaining that connecting with others’ lives inevitably changes your own, according to Vogue.
Back in 2014, actor Brad Pitt was excused from serving on a jury because officials worried he would be too distracting for the other jurors.
Several prominent figures, including Taylor Swift, Madonna, Donald Trump, and Barack Obama, have been contacted but ultimately weren’t involved.
