Lizzie Cundy, 56, reveals how heartbreak from footballer ex made her feel ‘lonely and isolated’ as she opens up about the realities of being a WAG in the noughties

Lizzie Cundy has spoken candidly about the true experiences of being a WAG during the 2000s, revealing the ‘solitary and secluded’ nature of her separation from her former football player partner.

In 1994, the well-known television personality, who was 56 years old at the time, tied the knot with the ex-Chelsea footballer Jason Cundy, then aged 55. They first crossed paths at a club in Richmond, London.

Lizzie split from Jason in 2012 after discovering his affair with opera singer Hannah Pedley.

Currently, in a fresh BBC documentary named “Sex After Celebrity,” Lizzie opened up about the challenges she encountered while maintaining a private life amidst her peak popularity.

In retrospect, during the time her marital separation was made known, she termed it as the ‘most difficult phase’ or ‘the toughest period’ of her existence.

She mentioned that the breakup of her marriage was particularly difficult for her, not only due to the marital dissolution and the disruption in her family, but also because it made headlines in the newspapers.

A photo of me in a swimsuit, glancing backward, surfaced without my knowledge, and it seemed to revolve around the end of my marriage. What’s more, others’ responses also caught me off guard.

Friends I was acquainted with found themselves at a loss for words. Mothers at school would go out of their way to cross the street rather than approach me, due to feelings of awkwardness or discomfort.

‘They didn’t really know what to say. So it actually became quite a lonely existence.’

She added: “Distrustful of whom to rely on, even questioning friends’ loyalty, she pondered, ‘Perhaps they leaked the tale?’ or, as one might wonder, ‘I confided in just one individual, yet how did it become public knowledge?’

‘And quizzing and questioning people that you’ve known a lifetime. So that side was awful.’

After the dissolution of her prominent marriage, Lizzie struggled to dive back into the world of dating again.

She mentioned that it can be challenging to transition from a highly publicized romance into dating again, as trust issues often arise due to past experiences. Indeed, she personally faced such difficulties.

On one occasion, I found myself on a date, and he kept glancing at his phone. It struck me as suspicious, and I recall thinking to myself, “I believe you might be secretly filming me.

‘So I just said it out, “Is your phone on? Are you recording?” And he just went, “Yeah…”‘

In contemporary times, the concept of beauty has been rejuvenated, particularly in the realm of dating, as she expressed it as ‘exceptional now’.

After that, she began dating Danny Cipriani, a rugby player from England, and has since then experienced several relationships away from the limelight.

The TV star said: ‘I am loving dating. I do long-distance relationships, which is fantastic.

You can occasionally share playful or humorous images with each other to keep things lively in your conversations. These images are not constant and should not become bothersome.

‘I’ve found that men excel in various areas. For example, there was this one fellow I knew, and I would often find myself thinking, “Wish he had a bit more zest for life and enjoyed going out in the evenings.”‘

I have a diverse group of friends; one is passionate about football, another enjoys dining out, one always manages to make me smile, one is excellent in the bedroom, and together they cover all my social needs.

‘So that’s what… I’m free. I love it, and I’ve never been happier.’

Sex After Celebrity is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
