Living the wrestling gamer’s dream: The Chris Denker Story

Living the wrestling gamer's dream: The Chris Denker Story

As a long-time gamer and wrestling enthusiast, Chris Denker‘s story truly resonated with me. His passion for both gaming and wrestling was evident in his Monday Night Madness show on WWE 2K and his dedication to sharing that passion with others through YouTube.

Chris Denker piqued my interest when he introduced an AEW fantasy wrestling show on WWE 2K, titled Monday Night Madness, on his DenkOps channel. His commentary skills were engaging and responsive, leaving me impressed. Recently, videos emerged of Chris Danger (his ring name) in wrestling gear approaching the DPW ring. I became curious about how a well-known YouTube wrestling game enthusiast ended up wrestling with some of the most popular indie talents. I reached out to him with numerous questions and he graciously provided answers.

At Wrestlemania VI, Chris discovered his newfound love for wrestling. A captivating poster of Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior ignited his interest, leading to their match being the turning point. Later on, Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper and Kenny Omega vs. Bryan Danielson matches inspired him further in his wrestling exploration.

Chris discovered his deep affection for video games and professional wrestling through experiences with Super Mario 64, WCW/NWO, WWF No Mercy, and WrestleMania 2000. Realizing he wanted to combine these interests in a career, Chris remembered the intensity of his daily video streams showcasing his Chris Danger persona playing career modes in WWE 2K, Wrestling Empire, and AEW: Fight Forever. His enthusiastic reactions to wrestling’s outrageous ring events earned him an impressive following of over 1.6 million subscribers within just 5-6 years. While Chris could have thrived as a YouTube personality alone, he felt compelled to explore new opportunities and expand his love for wrestling.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: I was fortunate enough to have contacts through DPW, an independent promotion founded by Anthony Douglas, James Darnell, and Johnny Blud. Joining their team to help build their company was an easy decision for me. In the beginning, I took on the role of Chris Danger, a manager position that I truly enjoyed. Later on, I reached out to Shawn Spears and Tyler Breeze, who ran Flatbacks Wrestling School in Florida, to train me in becoming a real-life wrestler.

Chris Danger’s journey to becoming a legitimate wrestler was filled with harsh setbacks. The exhaustion he experienced was unlike anything he had felt before, making it no surprise that many give up after their initial training session. However, Chris persevered despite his discouragement. His hard work paid off, leading him to become a bonafide wrestler. His debut match against Spears remains a pivotal moment in his career, even though Shawn inflicted severe damage on him, leaving him with an arm injury. Today, Chris continues to train diligently to enhance his skills and even attempts to incorporate moves from 2K games into his repertoire. His ultimate goal is to wrestle consistently enough to make it to television.

Chris has encountered Adam Cole, Shawn Spears, Claudio, Tyler Breeze, and Xavier Woods during his wrestling career. He recently posted on Twitter that he secured my first victory in the ring. Reflecting on his path, Chris is deeply indebted to Spears, Breeze, and DPW’s founders. Their backing was essential for him to reach this point.

Chris Denker serves as a beacon of motivation for those believing their aspirations lie beyond their grasp. By merging his passions for gaming and wrestling, he transformed into a thriving content producer and independent wrestler. For individuals aspiring to tread in his footsteps, Denker recommends: “Maintain consistency above all else. Your journey won’t be flawless, and success may not materialize instantly. However, if you remain dedicated and focused on your objectives, the possibilities are endless.”

Thank you for the inspiration.
