Lives up to the hype: ITV’s gripping returning drama from Line of Duty team is just as intoxicating as before
Malpractice review based on episodes 1-3.
I’ve just finished binging on the latest hit series, Malpractice, created and penned by the brilliant Grace Ofori-Attah. When it debuted in 2023, it broke records as the most-watched premiere episode of a new drama on ITV1! (According to ITV themselves, no less.) What an amazing start for this gripping show!
As a dedicated gamer, let me share my excitement about the second season of “Malpractice” – another masterpiece from the creators of “Line of Duty“. Just like the first season, it’s packed with nail-biting tension and captivating storylines that keep you glued to your screen!
What to Read Next
This season, Tom Hughes steps into the role of Psychiatric Registrar Dr. James Ford, a character previously played by Niamh Algar, who’s now in the limelight and under close observation. He encounters trouble when he must balance the care of an apprehensive new mother with the potential commitment of a patient for psychiatric treatment.
Stating that the result of his decision was merely unfortunate significantly understates the catastrophic turn of events. Yet, it wasn’t just Dr Ford who found himself on shaky professional ground; his predicament unearthed shocking occurrences that jeopardized numerous careers and revealed deep-seated discord within the hospital.
Ofori-Attah and her crew have gathered an exceptionally gifted group of actors that truly make the intense feelings of the drama feel authentic.
Dr. Ford’s anxiety gradually intensifies throughout the series, transforming into overwhelming fear that leads him to make poor decisions, which in turn disrupt his life even further. Hughes skillfully depicted this tension within James’s character, ensuring that his anguish was consistently felt and pulsated through the storyline as events unfolded.
In our game, I was paired up with Selin Hizli, who played the role of Dr. Sophia Hernandez. Her character was driven by self-preservation, which made for an intriguing dynamic. Hizli’s performance was tense and edgy, creating a slightly uneasy yet captivating atmosphere on screen.
Zoë Telford is another rising talent portraying Dr. Kate McAllister. Her knack for giving her character a slick and seamless ambiguity significantly heightened the unsettling atmosphere that the narrative required.
In this show, Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé serve as the constant characters, connecting each season by portraying Norma Callahan and George Adjei, who work within the Medical Investigation Unit (MIU). These two have maintained the same determined and curious approach to their cases since the beginning.
In the first season of Malpractice, the storyline might have resonated more with audiences due to its relatability, as they could empathize with how the disruptive effects of the pandemic could potentially disrupt the life of the talented doctor, Dr Lucinda Edwards (Algar).
Instead, season two of “Malpractice” compels you to forge a bond with its characters primarily through its finely crafted dialogue and the captivating performances of its actors.
Mental health continues to be a significant aspect of the series, and in the latest season, it’s been integrated more prominently by focusing on Dr. Ford’s unique professional field.
The emotional impact brought about by the vulnerability displayed by his patients, especially the previously mentioned apprehensive new mom, Rosie Newman (played by Hannah McClean), is profound.
In episode one of the second season of “Malpractice”, there’s a scene that subtly takes your breath away. Although it might be predictable to some viewers, the way it is carried out will momentarily pause your heartbeats.
As the tension escalates more and more, watching each episode of Malpractice will leave you feeling just as stressed out as the characters portraying the doctors.
