Live-action Snow White trailer looks intriguing, but Disney faces an uphill battle

As a lifelong Disney enthusiast and someone who grew up with the original Snow White etched into my childhood memories, I must say that the recent teaser trailer for the live-action remake left me feeling rather conflicted. On one hand, I’m excited to see Rachel Zegler bring her undeniable talent to the role of Snow White and Gal Gadot as the wicked Queen. But on the other hand, some of the decisions made by Disney seem to be stirring up unnecessary controversy.

Disney’s live-action take on the classic tale Snow White, which has stirred up some controversy, recently unveiled its initial teaser trailer. Given the tumultuous journey of the film since Rachel Zegler (known for her role in West Side Story) was chosen to play Snow White, it’s no wonder that reactions have been split.

In the trailer, we don’t see many specifics; instead, it offers a broad overview or hint of what the movie might be about.

In this production, we catch glimpses of Rachel Zegler’s stunning voice. The digital dwarves are revealed to us. Gal Gadot delivers the legendary queen’s famous quote. And there appears the notorious enchanted poison apple.

To put it straightforwardly, the initial trailer for Disney’s Snow White truly meets all expectations. It has piqued my interest, but I haven’t been completely convinced yet.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can certainly understand Disney’s predicament when reimagining classics like Snow White in live-action. When you tread on beloved animated films, there’s always going to be a wave of skepticism. I’ve seen it myself with comments such as “Why mess with the original?” It’s a delicate balance between respecting the past and pushing forward into new territories.

Additionally, there has been controversy surrounding the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White, with some individuals expressing prejudiced views that she is not ‘white enough’ for the role. However, let me emphasize that Zegler possesses a remarkable appearance and vocal skills for the part. She showcases extraordinary talent, and I have complete confidence in her ability to bring the beloved princess to life on screen.

Yet, Zegler’s explanation for the upcoming film may have backfired. Trying to highlight the film’s contemporary aspect, the actress stirred dissatisfaction among Disney enthusiasts and conservatives when she discussed the original movie instead.

In another chat with Extra TV, Zegler described the prince in the original movie as a “persistent suitor.” She highlighted that the love story was not the main focus of the new movie, and playfully suggested that her co-star Andrew Burnap’s scenes as Prince Charming might even be removed from the final cut.

As someone who grew up watching and cherishing the classic film made in the 1930s, I find it disheartening to see a new actor approach the material with such dismissive remarks towards the original work that holds immense nostalgic value for many fans. Having only seen the movie once before being cast, her general attitude and disparaging comments towards it feel incredibly off-putting, making it challenging for me to consider giving her another chance. The film’s enduring legacy is a testament to its timeless storytelling, and I believe that a more respectful and nuanced approach would have been both more fitting for the source material and more welcoming to those of us who hold the original close to our hearts.

Regard the original work with due respect, as I personally believe that while it might not align perfectly with contemporary progressive ideals, it still holds value and significance.

Simultaneously, this movie has encountered criticism from conservative political groups who have branded it as “woke.” Not only do they object to a biracial Latina actress portraying Snow White, but they are also displeased with the deviations from the original storyline. In contrast to the traditional narrative where a prince rescues the princess, the film has shifted drastically, even to the point where the lead actress herself claims she doesn’t require Prince Charming in the movie. Whether she was being humorous or not, this approach seems somewhat outdated.

In conclusion, the seven dwarfs were brought to life in a traditional way, contrary to initial reports suggesting that Disney might replace them with “magical creatures” played by regular-sized actors. However, due to strong public response, Disney decided to use CGI instead for the depiction of their beloved dwarfs.

In the trailer, we catch a brief peek at them, and honestly, it appears quite unsettling. There seems to be an issue where they’re neither completely realistic nor fully cartoony, which I believe falls into the uncanny valley. This direction they’ve chosen doesn’t seem to be hitting the mark.

In summary, it seems that Disney is encountering a significant struggle in promoting and selling their live-action version of Snow White. Considering the alleged budget – estimated to be between $200 and $300 million (excluding marketing costs) – I find it challenging to envision this movie as being profitable in the long run.
