Disney is making a live-action version of the animated hit Moana, and the first trailer suggests it will closely follow the original story. While some of Disney’s recent live-action remakes haven’t performed well, the huge success of the Lilo & Stitch remake indicates that Moana could be another big hit when it arrives in theaters in 2026.
Disney has unveiled the official teaser trailer for Moana, which can be watched below. The film stars Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, the latter of whom reprises his role from the 2016 animated film. Known for his work on stage productions In the Heights and Hamilton, Thomas Kail directed Moana based on a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. The live-action remake hits theaters on July 20, 2016. Read the official synopsis:
Disney’s live-action Moana tells the story of a young woman (Catherine Lagaʻaia) who sets sail beyond her island home, Motunui, to save her people. She’s joined by the legendary demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an incredible adventure to bring back prosperity.
Joining the cast are John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. While some fans are sad that Auliʻi Cravalho won’t be reprising her role as Moana, she’s still involved as an executive producer. Dwayne Johnson is the only original actor returning on screen as Maui, and fans had mixed reactions to set photos of him during filming. Though he only appeared from behind in the official teaser, it’s still unclear whether bringing back half of the original leading pair was the right decision.
Disney Continues To Rely on Live-Action Remake Trend With New Adaptation
Disney’s live-action remakes had a rough start after Snow White didn’t perform well, but Lilo & Stitch renewed the studio’s interest in revisiting its classic animated films. Now, reports indicate Disney is actively developing a live-action Tangled, with Michael Gracey, known for The Greatest Showman, set to direct. While a production schedule hasn’t been announced, casting news is likely to come soon, as one important role has already been filled.
Everyone is eagerly anticipating who will play Rapunzel in the upcoming live-action film, but Disney appears to have found its Mother Gothel. Sources say Scarlett Johansson is set to take on the villainous role, continuing her work with Disney after her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though Johansson hasn’t officially confirmed the news, she recently expressed enthusiasm about potentially collaborating with director Rachel Zegler on the remake.
I’m really excited about the chance to work with director Michael Gracey. He’s an incredibly talented visionary, and I think any actor would be thrilled to collaborate with him.
