Liv Morgan truly needs her own time in the spotlight
WWE Monday Night Raw has moved from television to Netflix. The longest-running weekly wrestling show in the business recently aired what could be considered its most significant episode, boasting several of its leading performers, including Liv Morgan. As she stands in her second title reign, Liv Morgan is somewhat of a contentious character, not because of any actions on her part, but due to the opinions of fans. Regardless of whether she holds the championship or not, Morgan has star quality that many viewers eagerly anticipate will one day place her in a leading role within the women’s division.
Currently, Morgan is 227 days into her reign as WWE Women’s World Champion. Her enthusiastic fanbase eagerly supports her title hold. However, opinions differ on how strong a champion she has been portrayed as. Over the course of her title defense, she has successfully defended it five times. This stands in contrast to Nia Jax who held the recent Women’s Championship for 157 days and also defended it the same number of times (including Tiffany Stratton’s unexpected cash-in).
The main criticism revolves around WWE’s careless approach in creating suitable opponents for Morgan. It’s evident that beyond Rhea Ripley, there were no intentions to make anyone else a significant challenge to Morgan’s title defense. Even with the possibility of a three-way narrative involving her, Ripley, and Raquel Rodriguez, WWE Creative has been overly focused on one individual, to the detriment of Morgan’s full potential as a champion. This oversight mirrors the mistake made when Morgan cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase to defeat Ronda Rousey back in 2022.
Over the course of several years, various high-profile figures have been backed by online campaigns with messages like “you deserve it”. In 2024, one such campaign was launched for Morgan with the aim of positioning her in the main event as WrestleMania 40 approached. Though this initiative might have appeared ill-informed at the time, it will be intriguing to observe how Morgan’s run is ultimately viewed when it concludes. Equally significant will be determining where she lands on the card for the finale.
Liv Morgan frequently rises to the occasion when WWE requires her to take a prominent spot on their roster. Yet, once this requirement subsides, she’s swiftly relegated to a secondary role, which could diminish her reputation as a main-event talent if it happens too often. The question arises: will WWE’s pursuit of elevating Rhea Ripley as the leading lady in women’s wrestling come at the expense of nurturing another credible star like Liv Morgan?
