Little Britain creator David Walliams says cancel culture is 'exhausting' - after his comedy series was pulled off streaming services

As a longtime fan of David Walliams and his ingenious brand of comedy, I can wholeheartedly agree with his sentiments about cancel culture. His unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and maintaining the ‘edge’ in humor is what makes him an iconic figure in British comedy.

Famed British comedian David Walliams has slammed ‘cancel culture’.

Prior to a string of upcoming live performances in Australia next month, the 53-year-old creator and co-author of the witty satire television series “Little Britain” emphasized that humor should possess a sharp or daring quality to be genuinely hilarious and potentially side-splitting.

He expressed to The Daily Telegraph that it’s all quite draining, referring to the ongoing cultural movement often labeled as ‘woke,’ which has led to the removal of certain shows from airtime and the cancelation of comedians.

‘Things that are explosively funny are often on the edge, aren’t they?’ the funnyman continued.

‘[The issue] is complicated, but you just look at each joke as it comes really.

As a conscientious performer, I recognize that constantly worrying about potentially offending someone would hinder my ability to express myself freely on stage.

‘I kind of think people haven’t lost a sense of humour in the way that it’s often portrayed.’

Elsewhere in the chat Walliams said that he thought the point of comedy was to ‘make people happy’.

David Walliams experienced the harsh side of “public opinion shifts” when the television series he and Matt Lucas jointly produced in 2003, titled Little Britain, was withdrawn from broadcast in 2022.

The popular satirical TV series, known for mocking British societal norms, incorporated skits involving white performers donning blackface makeup.

In response to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations, Netflix decided to remove the program, co-created by Walliams and Lucas, titled Come Fly With Me from their platform as well.

Subsequently, both the BBC and BritBox acknowledged that they too made the decision to take down Little Britain, as times have evolved significantly since its initial broadcast.

The performances feature actors playing roles representing various cultural heritages, using makeup for character depiction.

I, a die-hard fan, can barely contain my excitement! On September 6, the hilarious UK comedian, David Walliams, is set to make his debut Down Under! His An Audience with David Walliams World Premiere Tour will take center stage at the Darling Harbour Theatre in Sydney. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I won’t miss for anything!

After Walliams and Kate Ritchie disclosed the actual facts regarding the gossip about their on-screen flirting during the 2022 season of Australia’s Got Talent, it was made known.

45-year-old British comedian and popular Australian radio personality met up with Kate Ritchie on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa show in May to address the gossip, and during their conversation, Kate couldn’t help but shower her colleague with compliments.

Upon sitting beside David, our shared interests sparked a deep connection between us – our fashion tastes, specifically his wardrobe, were among the topics that resonated with me profoundly.

‘Like, I mean, move over Chris Hemsworth wearing Tom Ford at the Met Gala, the other day.’

“Eagerly anticipating our future encounter in Australia, I can hardly wait to find ourselves side by side at a desk, exchanging tales and discussing the latest fashion trends!”
