Liquid upset Spirit in Fall Finals opener

As a seasoned CS:GO analyst with years of experience under my belt, I must say that this match between Spirit and Liquid was nothing short of thrilling. The performance of donk on Dust2 was truly masterful, reminding us all why he’s one of the best in the game. His 25 kills were a testament to his skill and determination, leaving Liquid scrambling to keep up.

In the closing game of Day 1 at the BLAST Premier Fall Finals, Liquid and Spirit went head to head. This was the first encounter between the North American team and Spirit since the arrival of Justin “jks” Savage and Roland “ultimate” Tomkowiak as new members. Despite Danil “donk” Kryshkovets’ exceptional performance throughout the series, it was Liquid who managed to pull off a surprising 2-1 victory.

Prior to the game, James Banks from BLAST interviewed Liquid’s newcomer AWPer (Anti-Matter Weapon Expert), the Polish player, who has been seizing every moment of his unexpected chance. He has managed an impressive 1.21 rating during his LAN performances with Liquid.

This place is wonderful, and each competition offers a fresh learning opportunity. Previously, I could only observe these events as a Twitch spectator, but now, experiencing them firsthand is truly enriching. Each passing month spent playing will undoubtedly improve my skills, as I’m committed to putting in the work. I’m far from content with my current playstyle and won’t be for some time.

Regarding the ESL Pro League (EPL), Ultimate was frank about his experience. Although the defeat was hard to accept, it underlined aspects of his AWPer role that need further development. Given this was his initial playoffs appearance, it’s just the beginning of his journey to improve and grow.

The experience was beneficial, even though we unfortunately ended up losing. On a personal level, I gained significant insights from this event. Certain aspects of the game took me by surprise, and I was thrown off balance due to certain uncontrollable circumstances. However, it proved to be an excellent learning opportunity for me.

Eventually, someone inquired about Ultimate’s teamwork with IGL (In-Game Leader) Russell “Twistzz” Van Dulken. The Polish player explained that they were both adjusting to each other’s playstyles, with him aiming to remain as agile and responsive as possible to support his leader.

It’s clear that Twistzz’s input holds significant weight for me, so I make it a point to pay close attention to his comments. I strive to adjust my gameplay based on his calls, and he does the same for me. Essentially, we’re both adapting our playstyles to suit each other’s strategies. Moreover, I aim to be as active as possible because I understand that this will benefit our team’s game leader.

Map 1 – Dust2 – donk masterclass with 25 kills

Spirit kicked off the series with a pistol win conversion. In the gun round, ultimate found the crucial opener to gift Liquid their first. However, donk came in swinging with a series of multi-kill rounds, extending his team’s lead to 6-2 as he found every kill and defuse his team needed. The half-closer came down to a 1v1 between sh1ro and YEKINDAR as both players resorted to their sidearms. It was the AWPer who emerged victorious to lock a 9-3 half for Spirit.

For Spirit, things couldn’t have been better as they kept dominating Liquid in their attack, with donk’s charge causing significant damage. In return, NA side faced a brutal 25-9 defeat, experiencing a thorough masterclass as the match concluded with a score of 13-3 in Spirit’s favor.

Map 2 – Nuke – NAF keeps Liquid alive

On Spirit’s map choice of Spirit, Liquid had a rocky start losing the match, but they regrouped effectively on the CT side, leading to an 8-4 half. The edge Spirit gained from Dust 2 was diminished as zont1x failed to get kills for 14 rounds consecutively until a critical double kill. This set off a comeback where donk racked up multiple kills and magixx defended A superbly, tying the game at 10-10. After a strategic pause by coach mithR, Liquid broke Spirit’s winning streak with a decisive T-side gun round. The teams exchanged rounds, but Spirit came close to pushing the game into overtime.

In a 1vs3 scenario with the bomb secured by the CT team, the match seemed hopeless for NAF. However, he hadn’t gotten the message that things were dire. After eliminating sh1ro at the lobby entrance, NAF cleverly descended through a vent, catching the remaining two CTs off guard. He swiftly eliminated them from the ramp, taking the series to a third map. Liquid and Spirit were set for an intense battle to determine who would advance in the Fall Finals.

Map 3 – Anubis – Liquid closes out an upset win

In the initial phase of the match, Anubis served as the battleground, with both teams having prepared well and ending the first part evenly at 3-3. Following impressive performances by YEKINDAR and NAF on the first two maps, it was JKS who stepped up on the CT side of Anubis, securing an early advantage of 6-3. Spirit managed to claim 4 rounds on their attacking side, a lower number than they likely anticipated considering sh1ro’s impressive tally of 18 kills.

In the heat of the second half, it was a back-and-forth battle, but having taken the lead early on, we (Liquid) emerged victorious. With our North American opponents on the verge of securing an upset win, they found themselves at the series point. Faced with a 1v2 clutch situation, YEKINDAR masterfully navigated his duels to seal a thrilling 2-1 victory for us.

Liquid now moves to the upper bracket in Fall Finals Group B, while Spirit drops down to face Astralis in the lower bracket. For chopper’s side, a match against Astralis should be a walk in the park to lock in playoffs. Liquid, meanwhile, has to hope that they come out on top in the Vitality rematch.
