Liquid star Eamon Downes has died: Tributes pour in as rave pioneer behind club anthem Sweet Harmony loses five year cancer battle

Beloved dance music trailblazer Eamon Downes passed away this week after bravely fighting cancer for five years, as reported by his closest companions.

In the early ’90s, the gifted music producer, commonly recognized as Ame, achieved great acclaim, serving as one-half of the innovative dance duo Liquid, who were at the forefront of the scene.

Downes is survived by wife Stella and daughter Bea, the couple’s only child.

Announcing his passing through social media, fellow DJ Billy Daniel Bunter shared: ‘With deep sorrow, I inform everyone that we’ve lost Eamon Downes – a loving husband to Stella, doting father to Bea, and one of my dearest friends. This loss is truly painful.’

I can’t forget the time he played ‘Sweet Harmony‘ over the phone, which got cut off before it finished. When XL Records picked it up, he was thrilled. He would send demo tapes by bicycle to Pete Tong and then directly to me at Labrynth. That aspect of things truly excited him.

Downes, along with his bandmate Shane Heneghan, were signed to XL Recordings, a label that catapulted The Prodigy into fame. Together, they achieved one of the most significant hits of their time with “Sweet Harmony.

The track prominently featuring the 1987 single “Someday” by CeCe Rogers, particularly its uplifting piano melody and gospel tunes, rapidly gained popularity on dance floors in UK clubs after its debut as an independent release in 1991.

After initial success with their Liquid EP, Sweet Harmony saw wider popularity the following year when XL Records released it as a standalone single. The song ascended to the number 15 spot on the UK Top 40 charts.
