The popular action series is returning to its roots with a new movie focusing on John Rambo’s beginnings. Lionsgate has announced that a prequel to the classic First Blood films will arrive in theaters on June 4, 2027. A new poster with the series’ recognizable red logo confirms this will be a cinematic release, not available for streaming. Noah Centineo will take on the role of the younger Rambo, previously played by Sylvester Stallone.
The new film, set during the Vietnam War, tells the story of how John Rambo became the skilled and troubled Green Beret we meet in First Blood. Director Jalmari Helander, known for his intense action film Sisu, aims to deliver a raw and realistic survival story. He describes the prequel as focusing on Rambo’s resilience, determination, and the devastating impact of war on his innocence.
David Harbour, known for his role in Stranger Things, is joining the cast of the new Rambo film as Colonel Samuel R. Trautman. Trautman, a character originally played by Richard Crenna, is Rambo’s commander, mentor, and one of the few people who really understands him. James Franco, Jefferson White, Quincy Isaiah, Yao, and Jason Tobin will also appear in supporting roles.
For the first time, Sylvester Stallone won’t be acting as Rambo in a new film, but he’s still heavily involved as an executive producer. He recently shared on social media that the movie will be a prequel, showing how Rambo’s story of tragedy and violence began.
Hollywood is bringing back popular action heroes from the 1980s, and the new Rambo movie is a chance to explore the character’s troubled past and realistic struggles. We’ll find out if the new actor can capture the intensity of Rambo in just over a year. The film, John Rambo, is set to premiere in theaters on June 4, 2027.
