As a seasoned gamer and cinephile with a penchant for behind-the-scenes drama, I must say that this recent fiasco surrounding the trailer for Megalopolis has me rolling my digital dice in disbelief. The audacity of using false quotes from critics is not only unethical but also downright laughable.
Due to using falsified critic quotes, Lionsgate has withdrawn the trailer for their upcoming film, Megalopolis.
The movie, independently financed by renowned director Francis Ford Coppola following his unsuccessful attempts to produce it through Hollywood for many years, offers a science-fiction interpretation of the downfall of Rome and boasts an ensemble cast that includes Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito.
Through Variety, the deleted trailer showcased criticisms leveled against Francis Ford Coppola’s earlier movies, which are now regarded as classics, in an effort to construct a storyline suggesting that this upcoming film could break through any negative perceptions and become a pillar of cinema.

It turns out that the highlighted quotes mentioned in the trailers are not found in the actual reviews at all. For instance, the quote attributed to Roger Ebert about Coppola’s film “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” from 1992 being a “triumph of style over substance,” was actually used in his review of Tim Burton’s “Batman” three years prior.
One of the critics falsely cited is Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman. He also reviewed Coppola’s vampire movie back in the day, but didn’t call it “a beautiful mess” as the trailer indicated.
As someone who appreciates creativity deeply, I can’t help but feel frustrated when others misrepresent our work. It’s unfair to attribute opinions to us that we haven’t expressed ourselves.
“Then again, the trivial scandal of all this is that the whole Megalopolis trailer is built on a false narrative. Critics loved The Godfather. And though Apocalypse Now was divisive, it received a lot of crucial critical support.”

Lionsgate has announced that they will be retracting the trailer for their film titled Megalopolis, following recent controversies, as expressed in a statement.
“We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”
Megalopolis is set to hit UK and US cinemas on September 27.
