Lionsgate Explores AI for Content Adaptation and Production Efficiency

Summary

  • Lionsgate is leveraging AI through a partnership with Runway to adapt existing film content and enhance production efficiency
  • The studio aims to use AI to adjust film ratings, convert live-action movies to animation, and create complex visual effects at a fraction of the traditional cost

Lionsgate is actively pursuing the use of artificial intelligence, particularly through a collaboration with AI company Runway, to transform their current content and make film production more efficient. This move could significantly alter the way movies are developed and distributed. Last September, they signed a deal with Runway for the first time, making this startup’s debut partnership with a major Hollywood studio.

Michael Burns, Lionsgate’s vice chairman, shared with New York Magazine that the studio is exploring different AI technologies. A possible application they are considering is reworking their vast library for changes in mood, format, and rating. This could lead to family-friendly edits or even turning live-action movies into animated ones. Burns mentioned that a live-action film could be swiftly transformed into an anime version suitable for a PG-13 audience within three hours with the assistance of AI. Burns emphasized that this development would not affect actor compensation, but it would mean that “Now I can create an anime version, make it PG-13. Three hours later, I’ll have the movie.” He added that this approach would allow for reselling the films in new ways.

Additionally, AI might bring about significant cost reductions in the manufacturing process. As Burns points out, an elaborate scene such as “10,000 soldiers on a hillside amidst a snowstorm with numerous horses” could potentially be created by AI for around $10,000, thus bypassing a costly multi-million dollar film shoot. The strategic implementation of AI is intended to facilitate the creation of movies and TV shows that would otherwise be economically infeasible.
