Linkin Park's Chester Bennington faced 'hour-by-hour' addiction battle before suicide aged 41, harrowing new book reveals

As I read through this heart-wrenching story, it’s impossible not to feel a profound sense of sorrow and empathy for the family and fans of Chester Bennington, the enigmatic frontman of Linkin Park who tragically took his own life. The band was a beacon of hope and inspiration for many, and Chester’s raw, emotional lyrics about his personal demons resonated deeply with so many.

In my own words, I, as a devoted admirer, can attest that the remarkable frontman of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington, fought a relentless struggle against addiction on an hour-by-hour basis during his last months before taking his life at age 41 in 2017. Fresh insights into this heartbreaking tale have been brought to light in a recent book.

On July 20, 2017, the lead singer of a rock band was tragically found dead at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, situated south of Los Angeles. His death was later confirmed as a suicide by hanging, following discovery by a housekeeper in his bedroom.

In a recently published book titled “It Starts With One: The Legend and Legacy of Linkin Park,” the closing chapters of the musician’s life are portrayed from the perspectives of his loved ones and associates, as they disclose that he experienced a strong desire to drink during his final months.

According to an account shared by People, during interviews promoting the album ‘One More Light,’ he openly talked about his overall struggles in life. However, behind closed doors, he confided in his close ones about a particular issue: alcohol cravings had been overwhelmingly dominant in his mind yet again, as he put it.

Ryan Shuck, a good friend of Chester’s, explained that he was detailing his struggle against addiction on an hourly basis,” said Ryan Shuck. During the 2000s, it was under Ryan’s guidance that one of Chester’s darkest periods resulted in the only Dead by Sunrise album. In the weeks before his passing, they had been exchanging messages about Chester’s alcoholism.

Previously, it was disclosed that Chester struggled with a relapse while creating the band’s 2017 album, One More Light. This struggle involved heavy drinking during the latter part of 2016.

Chester’s wife Talinda had said Chester ‘had been sober for almost six months’ prior to his death.

The book goes on to say: When an autopsy and toxicology tests later showed traces of alcohol in Chester’s system at the time of his death, with an empty bottle of Stella Artois and a nearly empty glass of Corona found in the room, Talinda was not taken aback. She instinctively knew that these beer bottles symbolized a momentary slip-up. “I realized immediately that this drink activated that sense of shame,” she stated, “activated deep-rooted, unhealthy patterns from his past.

In his last phase of life, Chester was with his spouse Talinda and their trio of kids at their cabin which they call home in Sedona, Arizona.

In the year 2006, Talinda tied the knot with Chester. Together they raised Tyler (aged 16), Lily (11 years old), and Lila, who was ten at the time. Chester had sons named Isaiah (24) and Jamie (26) with Elka Brand, and he also had Draven, who was 20 years old, from his previous marriage to Samantha which lasted from 1996 until 2005.

Following a heartwarming snapshot of us together with our children, I found myself back in Los Angeles, engrossed in my professional obligations. As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always emphasized the importance of balance, and that was evidently my focus at that moment. In an interview from 2018, Talinda shared: ‘He was content. He gave me a farewell kiss, he gave our children a farewell kiss, and sadly, that was the last time I saw him.’

In the days leading up to his passing, Chester was seen by his bandmate Mike Shinoda for the last time at a recording studio.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming book, penned by Jason Lipshutz and due for release in October. The title promises a captivating narrative, ‘Chester had introduced me to the indie rapper and poet Watsky, after building up anticipation for quite some time.’ Later, Watsky and his friends departed from the studio, but Chester and I remained, chatting away for hours, bouncing song ideas off each other, strategizing our upcoming performances. It was nothing extraordinary or newsworthy; it was simply a part of our routine, a testament to our bond.

Following Chester’s passing, the band expressed their sorrow in a deeply emotional message, stating: “Waves of sorrow and disbelief continue to ripple through our family, as we struggle to accept the reality of what has transpired.

‘We’re trying to remember that the struggles you faced, which caused you to leave us, were an inherent part of your unique charm. To be specific, it was your raw and honest depiction of those hardships that initially captivated everyone.’

The lead singer was transparent about his past struggles with drug addiction and confessed in an interview from 2011 that he used to be a severely addicted alcoholic.

After tying the knot with his second spouse, Talinda, in 2005, he chose to seek treatment at a rehabilitation center for his substance abuse issues, which included both drugs and alcohol. It wasn’t until 2007 that he started experiencing significant changes.

In a 2011 interview, he stated that he doesn’t consume alcohol, choosing instead to live a sober lifestyle. While he had been drinking for the past six years, he has decided not to continue in that pattern of life.

Established in 1996, Linkin Park gained global recognition following the massive success of their first studio album, Hybrid Theory, released in 2000. This groundbreaking record went on to sell over 32 million copies around the world throughout its lifetime.

The debut featured the strength of the four hit singles One Step Closer, In The End, Crawling and Papercut.

Recently, it was made known that Linkin Park has brought on board a new frontman, Emily Armstrong, and unveiled their intentions for a global tour and a fresh album.

However, the announcement received criticism as Jaime, Chester’s son, challenged Emily over her connections with Scientology and past endorsements of Danny Masterson. Meanwhile, Susan Eubanks, Chester’s mother, accused the band of breaking their commitment to inform her if they were planning a reunion.

Jamie publicly criticized Emily for being considered a replacement, following the revelation that she had earlier supported “That 70s Show” actor Danny, who was found guilty of rape and received a minimum sentence of 30 years in prison. This move has sparked strong opposition.

Jaime mentioned on Sunday, as reported by Page Six, that people seem to find it uncomplicated or intuitive to envision Linkin Park undergoing a transformation.

He added: ‘They’re having a hard time wrapping their head around how you: 1). hired your friend of many years @emilyarmstrong to replace [Chester].’

Jamie stated that the band declined to recognize the effect of employing someone similar to Emily, who later admitted that she had misperceived the Masterson scenario and thought she was assisting a friend.

Jamie mentioned that Shinoda, aged 47, prematurely announced Armstrong’s entry into the band in September, a month recognized as Suicide Prevention Month.

In the meantime, Susan, Chester’s mom, stated that she discovered Armstrong through a search on Google, and the act of betrayal caused her to weep.

Although there have been rumors about conflicts with Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn in recent times, she maintains that neither of them informed her about an upcoming reunion.
