Line of Duty makers’ new show cancelled after 1 season

As a devoted fan of captivating British dramas, I was genuinely thrilled when I stumbled upon “The Gathering” this past spring. The series, set against the backdrop of elite sports, promised an engrossing narrative that would keep me on the edge of my seat. And boy, did it deliver!

Channel 4 show The Gathering has been cancelled after only one season.

The drama that debuted in May won’t return for another season, as confirmed by Radio Times.

The event, titled “The Gathering“, originated from World Productions, a company renowned for creating successful shows such as the BBC hit series “Line of Duty” and Sky Atlantic drama “Save Me“.

The six-part show, penned by author Helen Walsh, delved into the intense and occasionally risky realm of top-tier athletics.

Fresh recruit, Eva Morgan, portrayed the character of working-class Liverpool student Kelly, who suffered a brutal assault during a rave on a tidal island.

In the production, Sadie Soverall from Saltburn played the role of Jessica, Kelly’s gymnastics teammate. Meanwhile, Vinette Robinson, known for her work in Boiling Point, portrayed Kelly’s mother, and Warren Brown, famed for his role in Luther, took on the part of Kelly’s father.

Despite garnering positive critic acclaim, the television series struggled in terms of live audience, as reported by Broadcast, with only 590,000 viewers tuning in for the second episode.

In a conversation with The Sun, executive producer Simon Heath clarified that the show had done well on Channel 4, however, with fresh leadership and different objectives, it’s unfortunate to say that The Gathering will not return.

A Channel 4 representative shared with Deadline about the show’s cancellation, stating, “We are incredibly proud of The Gathering and all its accomplishments.

The show stood out by featuring local voices, both in front of and behind the camera, and received much acclaim for its accurate portrayal of Liverpool and the surrounding area, Merseyside.

Each year, just like other broadcasting stations, Channel 4 needs to choose which series to cancel, renew, or finish, so we can continue to bring new and exciting programming options to our audience.

A big thanks goes out to the talented author and producer, Helen Walsh, the amazing production team at World Productions, as well as our exceptional cast. We’re excited about the possibility of collaborating with them once more in upcoming ventures!

The Gathering aired on Channel 4.
