Disney’s film “Freaky Friday” managed to reach a significant box office achievement, recovering its production costs within three days after release, even though it debuted as the second highest-grossing movie in the U.S. during that period.
In a revival that brought Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan together again, nearly two decades since their last collaboration in Freaky Friday (2003), the subsequent film premiered, earning approximately $29 million within the United States during its debut weekend on August 8th.
In a close call, Zach Cregger’s horror-thriller “Weapons” managed to claim the number one position at the North American box office, earning an impressive $42 million, just surpassing our movie.
A significant number of viewers from different countries contributed to Freaky Friday’s worldwide earnings reaching $45 million, with $16 million coming from foreign sales, as reported by Deadline.
The movie’s production cost, as reported, aligns with a $45 million budget, making it one of the 41 films globally in 2025 to surpass that figure in production costs.
Rapidly recovering costs is certainly a good thing, but industry experts caution that most films must earn approximately 2.5 times their production cost to make a profit. This means the sequel’s potential breakeven point is about $105 million.

I can’t get enough of that magical movie magic! When the original Freaky Friday hit theaters, it instantly captured hearts and minds, raking in a whopping $22.2 million domestically on its opening weekend alone. But wait, there’s more! This enchanting tale went on to charm audiences worldwide, ultimately grossing an astounding $160.8 million globally. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps!
If the upcoming release maintains a similar pattern, it might earn over $200 million globally during its time in cinemas, thereby potentially boosting the chances for a third movie to be made.
Back in 2003, I was absolutely living for the moment when Jamie Lee and Lindsay Lohan graced our screens as the hilarious duo who magically swapped bodies in the blockbuster comedy, “Freaky Friday.” It’s still one of my all-time favorites!
Enthusiasts had eagerly anticipated a follow-up to the legendary comedy for quite some time, but they had to endure a twenty-year wait since its initial release in cinemas.
Jamie Lee, in a recent disclosure, explained the reason behind the significant time lapse between the two film releases, as she confessed that she had been planning a sequel for quite some time.
Lindsay often found herself fielding questions about her movie due to the fact that, given she has a 15-year-old daughter, people assumed she was quite mature. This was something she discussed on The One Show.
In the end, someone from Australia commented, “Well, she is,” which left me puzzled since I’ve always known her as a young girl, so I wasn’t sure about her age.
‘So someone told me and I was, like ”Oh! well maybe we can make the movie. Let’s go!”’

At the age of fifteen, Lindsay took on the role of Anna Coleman in Freaky Friday, with Jamie Lee starring as her character’s on-screen mom, Tess Coleman.
After an unfortunate incident with a Chinese restaurant fortune cookie swap, a quarreling mother and daughter find themselves living each other’s lives due to a strange body-swapping mishap.
Regardless of their initial disagreements, the magical change eventually enabled them to understand each other’s perspectives better.
In the upcoming sequel, the famous duo will trade roles yet again, but beware, as four times the trouble awaits!
Anna Lindsay is gearing up to marry Eric Davies, but she’s encountering challenges because her teenage daughter, Harper, dislikes Eric’s teenage daughter, Lily.

In a clear display of disdain, Harper expresses her distaste upon hearing mock wedding vows, where she refers to her soon-to-be stepsister as a mischievous, irritating character with an overpowering accent.
At Anna’s bachelorette gathering, she and her mother Tess Coleman encounter a soothsayer (Vanessa Bayer) who hints that they might acquire additional knowledge through the experience of treading on each other’s footsteps.
Anna and Tess encounter another unusual situation where their bodies are swapped, but this time, it involves more individuals.
The following day, Anna finds herself inhabiting Harper’s body, as Harper has taken over Anna’s. Meanwhile, Lily, who is often called Grandma, is now occupying Anna’s step-daughter’s body, which was previously Anna’s.
A fourfold confusion breaks out among them as they struggle to adapt to their fresh responsibilities, leaving only a few days before the upcoming wedding.
Chad Michael Murray reprises his character, Jake, as two young women devise a plan to potentially reconcile Anna with her former lover amidst the mayhem of the upcoming nuptials.

Simultaneously, New Line/Warner Bros’ film raked in an impressive $27.5 million across 72 international markets, resulting in a grand total of $70 million globally for its opening weekend.
In its second weekend, Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps saw a drop of approximately 60%, earning $15.5 million within the United States.
The superhero film now stands at $240.3 million in North America and $434.2 million worldwide.
In a natural and easy-to-read manner, The second week of Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s movie “The Bad Guys 2” earned $10.4 million, representing a 53% drop from its initial release. This brings its domestic earnings over the past ten days to a total of $43.4 million.
In its second weekend, The Naked Gun by Paramount maintained its position but saw a 50% drop, raking in $8.4 million domestically, bringing the total to $33 million.
The R-rated comedy, with its success, has emerged as a notable highlight of the year within the genre, pulling in almost $17 million upon its release.
