Linda Evangelista, 59, reveals what she really thought about George Michael's 1990 Freedom video

As I delve into this captivating tale of Linda Evangelista, a veritable icon of the fashion world, I am struck by the remarkable depth and versatility she has shown throughout her illustrious career. From gracing the covers of Vogue to strutting down the runway for the most prestigious designers, Linda’s life has been an exhilarating rollercoaster ride through the glamorous world of high fashion.

Linda Evangelista has experienced numerous unforgettable instances throughout her professional journey, yet arguably none have been as memorable as her appearance in George Michael’s “Freedom” music video.

In 1990, the video not only featured Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, and Tatjana Patitz, but it also propelled these supermodels to unprecedented levels of fame and cultural relevance within the realm of pop culture.

However, Linda, aged 59, nearly missed out on the opportunity. In a conversation with Drew Barrymore on her show, Linda admitted that initially, she had no interest in being a part of it whatsoever.

Drew wanted to know from Linda how she found the process of creating that video, and if she had any idea back then that it would become so iconic in our culture.

Linda, sharing a memory from before her modeling career, explained: “No, I had no idea about that. I didn’t want to do it, really not my style. But my dream was fashion and George persisted, eventually leading to an extraordinary friendship between us. I still miss him.

Linda remarked, “George Michael deserves most of the praise because he propelled us to an entirely different realm.

She mentioned, “We had just started making a mark in the fashion world when, surprisingly, children on the street began recognizing me. That’s what truly sealed the deal for me.

2023 saw the release of an AppleTV+ documentary titled “The Rise of the Supermodels,” which chronicled Linda, Naomi, Cindy, and Christy’s journey to stardom and how they revolutionized the modeling industry.

At long last, we’re thrilled to share our tale alongside the exceptional group at Imagine, under the guidance of Barbara Kopple. We believe this collaboration will excite us just as much as we hope it will captivate viewers,” Evangelista expressed on Instagram previously.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d be thrilled if you viewed this as more than just an occasion; rather, it’s a vibrant testament to the richness of our personal journeys. It’s a heartfelt salute to the unyielding bond of friendship, the allure of dreams, and the indomitable spirit of perseverance that weaves the fabric of our lives together.

Last year, during a screening of the documentary series, Linda contemplated about one of the numerous transformations in modeling.

Today, most of the enchantment is created during the editing phase, she explained. In contrast, back in the 80s and early 90s, the magic was captured right when you heard the ‘click’ of the camera shutter.

In her conversation, Linda mentioned an encounter she had with a teenager named Drew approximately 35 years prior, which took place at an airport.

‘I wanted to ask you because I don’t know if you remember. When I turned 25 my mother said to me, “What would you like for your birthday?” And I said, “A game boy” and she got so mad and said, “I am not buying my model daughter, a game boy, 25 years old.”

She shared that when she agreed to purchase it herself, she found herself carrying her Game Boy. After flying from Los Angeles to Paris, then continuing south to France, she encountered you in the lounge. This was how she put it.

In a casual setting, “I was playing my Game Boy when I saw you from afar. It was Drew Barrymore! I couldn’t believe it, and we kept making eye contact across the room. In that moment, I thought to myself, ‘Seize the opportunity, Linda!’

I asked you, “Would you like to connect our Game Boys for a competition?” You then inquired, “Could you explain that to me?”, to which I showed you an unusual cord from my bag, which was used to link two Game Boys for multiplayer gaming.

‘And we played it. Do you remember?,’ Linda asked.

‘We played Tetris,’ Drew said.

‘We played Tetris,  Linda confirmed.
