Lin-Manuel Miranda explains why he wasn’t cast in Wicked

Lin-Manuel Miranda clarified the reasons behind his non-casting alongside Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the production of Wicked, where they portrayed Elphaba and Galinda respectively.

In a surprising turn of events, Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose musical was Oscar-nominated, debuted in cinemas last November. However, Miranda had hoped to land a particular role in Jon M Chu’s adaptation. Interestingly, despite directing the film adaptation of Miranda’s “In the Heights” musical released in 2021, Chu did not cast him for that part.

On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on February 4, Miranda chuckled as she remarked, “This issue seems to have been exaggerated far beyond reality.

As the curtain rises on this captivating show, there’s a moment when one of the munchkins darts out and exclaims, ‘Is it true you were her friend?’ Believe me, if you’ve ever witnessed a live performance of Wicked, they really know how to add a touch of flair when delivering that line.

In his words, the actor from Hamilton remarked, “That’s where the tale begins. So I thought, ‘I truly wished to deliver that line, Jon.’ Yet, I wasn’t chosen for the role. It could have been a distraction.

The role ultimately went to Kirsty Anne Shaw, who Miranda said was “great” at delivering the line.

He commented, “The actress in the film who performs that role is excellent, and she does it sincerely.” In a ‘Mean Girls’-esque manner, he almost asked, “Are rumors that she was her friend true?” However, this line didn’t quite make the final cut.

Musical “Wicked” was nominated for a total of 10 Oscars, with nods in the categories of Best Picture, Best Actress (for Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (for Ariana Grande).

Part two, which is officially titled Wicked: For Good, will arrive in cinemas this November.

As an avid Wicked fan, I’m thrilled to share that you can now pre-order the much-anticipated release of “For Good” on various platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store, and many more, available for purchase or rental starting November 22, 2025, right here in the UK!
